Because when Jim Brown was playing the average defensive linemen was smaller or about the same size as him. It was like a NFL running back playing against collegiate defenses.

Jim was a great player but he wasn't even the best running back of all time, let alone the best athlete.

So he was huge for his time, a time when there was very little sports medicine, no steroids, hell there wasn't even anywhere near as good of programs for these guys to go through their pre-professional careers. Much like boxing and every other sport, modern athletes are pampered, prepped and yes, drugged more than any other era.
