Most definitely but listening to people on these forums say he's was just a good athlete and never learned fundamentals is very ignorant for them to say. You can tell Roy knows boxing inside and out just by the way he talks in interviews and analyzes fights.

At this point I'm not liking Max or Steward. By the way I've only now entered the 4th season of The Wire, I know I'm late but I'm definitely feeling the show.
I hear ya. Max isn't the best but he is the lesser of the evils. Steward is mostly not trying to say anything controversial, except for his comments on Chavez, but he wasn't on the clock then. It might be just me but it seems sometimes Steward gets lost in the fight and doesn't know what is going on.

Has anyone else noticed that HBO edits the replays of PPV bouts to remove some of the live commentary?

Better late than never on The Wire. I'm actually watching season 5 for the 3rd time this week.

Roy is terrible when it comes to commentary. Listen to him on Jim Lampleys last episode. He rants about how Chavez comes into the rematch with Sergio with all of the confidence and that Sergio may not be able to beat Chavez again. At least Roy didn't mention God for five minutes like usual. Get me Tarver or Foreman. Sure, Big George comes off like he has never stepped into a ring in his life, but at least he is likeable while doing it. Roy just comes off like an ass.

Roy is right and if you think about any negative remark or knock on a fighter, it originated from a commentator.

I understand that fighters talk down on their opponent but after the fight they give that fighter respect.

However after, and even during the fight commentators like Lampley (main culprit) Merchant and Kellerman do their best to put an asterisk on a fighters win and in turn fans parrot a lot of these ridiculous statements and ideas.

If you ever paid attention, then you would see a huge contrast between guys like Foreman, Lewis and Roy when they called fights as they actually know what it takes to compete and get in the ring.

Even in a loss they can point out what a fighter can do to improve himself and help himself next fight and this in turn makes fans what to see the fighter again.

I'm sure most casual fans listening to HBO guys, not only wouldn't want to see the loser (as he is a bum/overrated) but the champ as well because HBO probably painted the picture that he cherry picked/fought a shot fighter/ fought a guy who was overrated to begin with.

Dana white would never allow that, and that is why UFC is as popular as it is and why most people don't take boxing that serious.
It also doesn't hurt the UFC that Joe Rogan is actually a decorated former competitive fighter. He has two black belts in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a 2nd degree black belt in taekwondo, and a green belt in judo.

I never knew Roy was even aware of the whole thing. I've been thinking and saying for years he is by far the most optimistic of the group and, even though I would like to see him more, he is perfect for BAD.

Lampley still shows hints of his old optimism when he's surrounded by Max and Roy. He used to be great at presenting boxing in the most noob friendly manner as possible while still towing the line and playing the role of objective reporter, which he does well. He's kinda getting better lately, but he I think he still comes across as a bit jaded and he speaks like most of the cynics that pervade boxing's fanbase.

There's nothing unique about being a boxing cynic... I enjoy watching people who enjoy being at the fights and seems like Roy usually is the only one.

[I would say that his worst performance in years was recently during the Gonzalez/Dzindziruk bout. He really didn't like what Sergiy was doing that night for some reason. That fight got close about round 9 and everyone on the crew mailed it in]

joe rogan is a black belt in jiu-jitsu under Eddie Bravo, green belt in Judo, 2nd degree black belt in Taekwondo. he can be pretty biased at times towards jiu-jitsu fighters but overall his commentating is ok.
