  • Known only by their nicknames

While I'm waiting to see Saul "Canelo" Alvarez fight, I was curious about different fighters who were known almost exclusively by their nicknames. I'm not talking about Sugar Ray's, Iron Mike's, or Jolting Joe's. I'm talking about:

    Ronald "Winky" Wright
    James "Bonecrusher" Smith
    Theodore "Tiger" Flowers
    Clarence "Bones" Adams
    Ed "Bearcat" Wright

Please list any others you can think of.

Everett "bigfoot" Martin. Without the nickname I wouldn't remember him. "Gentleman" Jim Corbett. " Irish" Jerry Quarry. 'Manos de piedra" Duran.

evidently nobody calls angulo "alfredo," or "angulo," in mexico
he goes by perro and is referred to as el perro

and back in the day plenty of guys used a surname of course in addition to a nickname.. tre badass

            "kid chocolate" (cuban bon bon)
            "Battling" nelson (the durable dane)
            "Kid azteca" (kid chino)

and then you have guys that are referred to by their nicknames more than others, but dont wear it around like a name like say "winky" wright might.

            "el terrible" morales
            "too sharp" johnson
            "two pound" stevie forbes

Wow. You came up with a lot of good ones. I'm surprised that I didn't come up with Charles "Sonny" Liston myself. Fighting Harada is a great one too because I can't even pronounce his first name.

Does " smokin" Joe count Scott? I was going through some old VHS fights. Many before I was born and saw a Wilber "vampire" Johnson. Interesting personality. Also Bobby " chappie" Czyz and " Rockin" Robin Blake.

Sorry, a tiny bit off subject but.... Has Kermit Cintron always been "the killer"? I never heard anyone call him that until tonight.

Kermit "The Killer" Cintron. Hmmmmm. It doesn't fit, AT ALL. Especially after watching him tonight. I think Kermit "the wet noodle" Cintron would be more accurate after the way he looked tonight. He had absolutely nothin in his arms/punches from the sound of the first bell.

Always thought it was weird that when you search "Razor" Ruddock at b@xrec it says no fighter found. Who ever called him Donovan when he was fighting?
