I would know since I made this same thread a year or two ago.

That bring said, my answer is whatever kadyo's answer is.

Yeah, given he's a math professor lol.

        Conventional pemdas is just a general rule, and as such rules are meant to be broken, such as the case here with implicit multiplication i.e. multiplication by juxtaposition. This equation, written out correctly, would look like;

        48
        -----
        2(9+3)

^because of the juxtaposition, the 2 is to be included/multiplied first by the 9+3, before it is divided like it would in regular pemdas.

                I came up with 2.

The 2 being directly next to the parenthesis made me multiply whatever was in the parenthesis by 2.... And whatever that was would be divided.

                Therefore 2 times ...9 + 3...... 2 times 12..... Which is 24

                Back to the original

                48 / 24 = 2

The answer is a resounding 288. If we follow the order of operations known as PEMDAS, we do the following: parenthesis, exponents, multiplication & division, addition & subtraction.

                  Parenthesis first

                  48/2(12)

Since multiplication and division are equally ranked, we then go left to right, per convention

                  24(12)

                  Then we finish it up

                  288.

Besides, I used my T-I83 Plus using the same notation and it cranked out 288. This is crazy, but I learned something today. Please, don't argue with my calculator's logic. It is sound and should be respected. It is the law of the land and it reigns supreme.

                    48/2 = 24
                    24 x (9+3) = 24 x 12 = 288.

This is incorrect. This problem is not in fact an equation, it is a fraction. It should be treated like this:
                    48
                    --------
                    2(9+3)

                    or

                    48
                    ----------
                    2 x 12

                    or

                    48
                    ----
                    24

                    or

                    2
                    --
                    1

which of course is just 2.
I don't quite agree with this. Once you calculate the terms in parentheses, the remaining terms are of equal importance because they either involve division or multiplication. This, we solve going left to right. In doing so, we should get 12 x 24. In other words, the problem is not 48/[2(9+3)].
