  • Comments Thread For: Caballero's Protest Granted, Mikey Garcia Bout in Doubt

In a sudden turns of events, a planned fight between WBA featherweight champion Celestino "Pelenchín" Caballero (36-4, 23KOs) and mandatory challenger Mikey Garcia (28-0, 24KOs) is on the move once again. The fight was originally scheduled for July 28th in Indio, California and Telefutura was going to televise. A few days ago, promoter Sampson Lewkowicz confirmed his intentions to move the event to September 7 at the Hard Rock Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. And he secured the televised backing of Showtime, who planned to air the fight as part of their ShoBox series.

I thought the problem was that Caballero didn't want to have a 9 month layoff going into thsi fight, hence him wanting to fight at the end of July.

But Caballero is the champ, but he got the decision in a really close fight against Mathebula in Panama, so I would understand Garcia not wanting to travel to Panama.

Why can't they have it in Vegas on July 27th???

I think both things were an issue and the wba seems to have sided with caba on both. And I'm not sure how either fighter approaches it. Blame it on the corrupt state of boxing where ur almost certain to get robbed if u fight in the wrong place.

Orlando Salido should take this fight if Garcia dosen't.

That'd be a good fight. Salido's relentless pressure against Caballero's length and movement.

Salido would travel to Panama as well.

the WBA always gives special privileges to Caballero. If the bid was set why not accept it?

What's sad is that feud between Sampson and Caba is gonna stop this fight from happening, I highly doubt Mikey will go to Panama with a month notice.
