  • What makes a boxer "heavy handed" ???

Ok some guys that are hard hitters are explosive as in they are very fast think pacman, royjones, mike tyson, im not talking about those guys.

But some guys are heavy handed think george foreman, julian jackson, rocky marciano, etc

Now some of these heavy handed guys are not heavy in bodyweight yet their punches still feel heavy, is that because they are particually good at transfering bodyweight from leg to leg

    OR

Is there a genetic reason for the "heavy hand feeling"

What is the heavy handed feeling where does it come from?

Could it be bone structure? Are they tightning up their hands real tight on impact and that solidness it creates gives you that feeling of heavy handedness as well?

A guy with power that can shake you up good. Not necessarily one punch, put you down power. But a grinding down sort of power that once you take enough shots you'll eventually go.

Carl Froch is heavy handed. Joe Frazier is heavy handed

I've always wondered this myself being a big fan of Miguel Cotto.
He was always talked about as a big puncher but has no one punch knockouts or even knockdowns bar an over hand right against Bailey and the Jab knockdowns against Clottey and Gomes I think.
My brother gave the explanation that there is no difference.
Fighters like Cotto just never throw everything in to 1 punch.

Think Margarito, he never pivoted his full body weight and throw his back into a left hook like Danny Garcia , he just threw short shots that would have a better chance to land and wear you down.

Randall Bailey is a good example. If instead of throwing 5 all or nothing punches a round, he worked 3 minutes working the body, cutting off the ring, you'd hear heavy handed thrown around more.

julian jackson was very quickl handed as well. Its the punches you dont see coming are the ones that do the most damage. Randell Bailey and AA are heavy handed. I guess you could of sort of say matthysse but his is more of a accumaltion of body punchs and pressure.

This is a common question in boxing and the answer is simpler than we think - the best way to think about it is through an analogy: guys like Randall bailey and Julian Jackson are equivalent to those MLB 100 mph flame throwers like Nolan Ryan and strautsberg.

All other guys that have elite punch power like nonito donaire and pacquao also have god given punching power but also utilize speed, body torque, angles, etc

There is also a physical/ biological element to it: big powerful legs, in baseball, boxing and other sports yields high amount of power output in most cases. This is a scientifically proven fact. (keep in mind that's it's not in all but MOST cases)

Bottom line: you CAN teach somebody how to punch but you CANNOT teach somebody to be a puncher!

Heavyhanded guys are basically those guys who have wide wrists and heavy bones, an example is Kelly Pavlik slow puncher but hits hard as hell, also Randall Bailey he has some heavy hands, some guys have to load up like Tyson just to get power, but a true heavy handed fighter can hurt you with slow arm punches like Foreman, Pavlik, Angulo, these guys just to name a few.

It has to do with bone density and structure.
