After his defection from Cuba, he had to wait 8 years before he could enter the U.S. and turn pro. I think he defected in the early 2000's. He lost 8 years of his prime and he's now 35 year-old with only 13 pro fights...

Stevenson and Kovalev are fighting guys like Agnew, Fonfara and Caparello, so they could give him a title shot and it will hardly be a step down.
