It was Tuesday, and the CEO of Golden Boy Promotions was about to play host to a news conference at famed Olvera Street in Los Angeles to formally announce the Sept. 15 super welterweight title fight between champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez of Mexico and Josesito Lopez of Riverside (CA) at MGM Grand in Las Vegas (on Showtime).

Before it began, Schaefer deflected criticism that this fight is not nearly as compelling as the middleweight title fight between champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. of Mexico and Sergio Martinez of Argentina on the same night, at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas (on HBO pay-per-view).

Schaefer grinned slyly when asked by a BoxingScene.com reporter what he says to those preferring to watch the son of the legend, meaning the rapidly emerging Chavez Jr.

"Well, do you want to see a son, or do you want to see a legend?" he said. "Canelo is going to be a legend. So I don't really worry about what other promoters do."

Schaefer is as delusional as they come. The guy is a banker, money is his game, not boxing.

The truth is Chavez is actually the one daring to be great. He's fought two respected contenders in his last 2 fights and now is fighting the lineal champ and P4P #3, when he could easily hide behind the WBC who would protect him and his title like Canelo is doing. We will know if he is for real very soon. We don't know how good Canelo is, probably won't know for a while as he continues fighting outmatched smaller guys coming up in weight and past-it name fighters.

It's good to see Steward finally praising Chavez for his win over Lee instead of making bs excuses. I doubt that'll stop the haters though.
