People created god. There was no god before humans existed. God is a fictional concept created by humans.

Asking this question is missing the point of God. To believe in God you must believe in his attribute as an eternal being.

And to give them a sense of control over the world. If you can appease the gods, then you have more control than dealing with a mindless mother nature.

Also, maybe belief in gods persist because they offer people hope, justice and inner strength, and deal with the brutality and tragedies in life.
