On this evening the St. Louis-based trainer led his prized pupil, former junior welterweight champion Devon Alexander, into a crucial battle with rugged Argentinean Marcos Maidana in a fight that saw both fighters rise to 147 pounds. 2012 will be out with the old and in with the new. Or let me say...the true fighters will overtake some of these overhyped guys. Alexander is in a real good position. His performance against Maidana was superb. If he new how to set his shots up better, he could have KO'd him. Maidana is an overhyped fighter. Meaning, he will always look good against fighters that stand in front of him and try to bang. Matchmaking has made some guys look like great fighters. Manny Paquiao has achieved greatness during his lighter weight career, but at welterweight, it was all good matchmaking. Manny is another guy who needs his opponents to stand directly in front of him to be successful. I think fighters like Alexander,Ward, Bradley, Broner, and Russell are fighters that will reach greatness. They have styles that allow them to adapt to any boxer/brawler. That's what makes Mayweather who he is. He understands that boxing is a science and not a street fight. Its hit and not get hit. The same with Cotto. He's a boxer/puncher with a lot of skills. Put him in with anyone with any style and he will perform. Its the same with Marquez and Hopkins. They have mastered their craft. That's why they have had longevity in the sport. 140 thru 154 is about to get real exciting. You have some real well rounded boxers in those divisions that will keep it competitive. If the promoters handle it right, they can put boxing back in the spotlight. I think Manny, Chavez jr, Lopez, and those type of fighters have been or is about to be exposed. If Berto and Khan don't change trainers, they will be exposed yet again. Boxing will being going back to its roots. SKILLS!!!

Wait, you criticize Pacquiao's run at WW stating that he only fought fighters who made him look good stylistically, yet, praise Mayweather, a counter puncher, who shares the same names as WW as Pacquiao and then praise Miguel Cotto (quite possibly because Floyd is going to fight him) and ignore the fact that Pacquiao has faced him?

Biased much? Both Pacquiao and Floyd have gained their stardom from careful matchmaking which is why Pacquiao won't fight above 147 and Floyd will only fight the fading Cotto at 154 and not Martinez (who Pacquiao is also avoiding).

Alexander is vry skilled...although he beat maidanai dont kno if hes legit at ww...he looked good though bu id like to see him im with somebody like malignaggi or a mike jones first t see how he handles a big ww...ortiz might be a little to strong but id tune in...
