I've lived in Japan for a while, and studied the language a lot longer, but have never really indulged in Japanese anime or comics (manga). But I just watched "Castle in the Sky" (tenkuu no shiro) a bit ago and really enjoyed it. I've watched "Grave of the Fireflies" (hotaru no haka) years ago as well, which is really good, but a bit heart wrenching (it's about two children, a brother and his younger sister's, plight during World War 2, after losing their family in an air raid). These two films were made in 1986 and 88, respectively (their first 2 films), but they are still producing films. I think I now have to watch them all, I guess I'd might as well continue from the oldest to the present.
Btw, here is the wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Studio_Ghibli), all the titles right their for your convenience for bootlegging, or I mean purchasing.
