  • What boxing ATGs were footballers/basketballers?

Does anyone know whether any of the boxings ATGs like

    • Mike Tyson
    • Mack/Marciano
    • Larry Holmes
    • Clay/Ali
    • Lennox Lewis
    • Evan Fields
    • ...

were in the NFL/NBA or similar?

It's a known claim, that US boxing is dead because all potential greats are in the NBA/NFL, but were actually any of the old greats former basket- or footballers?

None or very few because you learn boxing usually when you're a child and do it throughout your life. The argument isn't that NFL or NBA players could step in the ring and kick ass right away. The argument is if boxing wasn't surpassed by those two sports, more kids would of tried out boxing instead of those sports and probably had a decent chance at excelling. A debate that is valid and a debate that I agree with.

Marciano was a varsity football & baseball player for his high school

Lewis played football & basketball (in Canada) in High School

Tyson didn't even attend school, where he would be able to participate in organized athletics. Cus got ahold of him and threw him in a boxing gym.

      The rest, have no clue...

      But what's your point?

I know guys like Roy Jones Jr, Mayweather and Mosley used to play basketball a lot as kids. Andre Ward used to do a lot of football.

Explains why they're such athletic freaks of nature.

The should be self evident to everyone. Only a moron wouldn't be able to understand this.

Jones Jr. Mosley, & Mayweather in their respective primes were BLINDINGLY FAST, and were athletic marvels.

When you speak of an athletic freak of nature, these are the type of guys you think of.

Ward isn't in that category athletically.

He only appears faster and more athletic than he really is, because he's been matched against a bunch of slow, stiff, Yuro's. Wait until he steps into the ring with a guy like Dirrell or Dawson, he's going to seem a whole lot slower than you previously thought he was.
