  • Comments Thread For: Burns Was Not Worried With Gonzalez Outcome

WBO world lightweight champion Ricky Burns believes he was starting to get on top of Jose Gonzalez at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow on Saturday night before the Puerto Rican dramatically quit on his stool before the start of the 10th round.

Gonzalez, the 29-year-old mandatory challenger, showed why he arrived in Scotland unbeaten in 22 fights as he took the bout to the home favourite.

Burns was three rounds down on all three judges' scorecards when the contest sensationally came to end as Gonzalez quit due to a wrist injury.

Asked if he relieved at the outcome, the Scot said: "Not at all. I felt that he was starting to tire.

Oh, Ricky, you're so foolish. Thank God for Britain's big boxing fanbase, this guy is an unknown scrub otherwise.

Why should he be worried, he won and the other guy didn't. I had it 6 to 3 so Ricky winning a decision wasn't out of the question with 3 rounds left to go.

Ricky's right; it is the championship rounds that often define a champion. But the fact Gonzalez gassed as he did made him very lucky.

Bet Warren was cursing God when Gonzalez quit.

Lol at people calling Burns "lucky". Gonzalez's heart gave out on him as Burns started coming on strong. Pathetic to criticise Burns for a gritty performance against a top quality operator with power. Smh.

Far from pathetic. You don't get credit for making another guy quit when the guy quits so damn easily. He soaked up the punishment Gonzalez was dishing out, that's what he deserves credit for.

He showed he was the more durable fighter. Yeah he was losing, but Gonzalez showed us he's not ready to go 12 rounds and he bit off way more than he could chew.
