  • Comments Thread For: Second guessing the second gessers on Bradley-Alexander

By Jake Donovan - The Monday morning quarterback – every sport has them, though perhaps there would be little to debate without them.

No matter what decisions are made, it seems that there is a crowd who will second-guess those very choices, or at least the ones that didn’t quite pan out.

There was certainly no shortage of second guessing in the wake of last weekend’s alphabet unification bout between Tim Bradley and Devon Alexander. Many questioned the location; several took issue with the financial investment, while some simply wondered aloud why the fight even happened at all.

Anything is easier to question in retrospect, and the fight itself provided plenty of fuel for the naysayers who sought any reason to take fault with the matchup.

The atmosphere was dismal. Neither fighter seemed to have an on-site following. The fight itself provided very few thrills and chills and we weren’t even afforded so much as a conclusive ending.

But none of that means the fight was completely unnecessary.

The foundation for last weekend’s bout was laid nearly 18 months ago. Both fighters appeared on the same Showtime card in separate bouts. Bradley was set to square off against Nate Campbell, while Alexander was slotted in the co-feature against former titlist Junior Witter.

Prior to the fight, Alexander insisted that Bradley was avoiding him. The claim came after Bradley gave up one of his alphabet titles, electing to face Campbell rather than Alexander, who was his mandatory challenger at the time.

The working theory on the side of Team Bradley was that there would be greater value in a showdown with Alexander somewhere down the line, when both fighters were more established – and hopefully still with titles and undefeated records in tow. [Click Here To Read More]

    Great article.

If Khan vs. Bradley happens then HBO deserves a lot of credit for staging what was essentially a tournament to crown the best 140 pound fighter.

agreed...and if maidana and alexander get it on then given the outcomes between maidana/khan and bradley/alexander then either rematch or maidana/bradley or khan/alexander would be worth a look afterwards.
basically there is a bit more mileage in these 4 beyond the 'final' if HBO want it and it's gonna take a decent effort for someone else to break into that quartet (or one or more of them move up to 147 which we'd expect from khan and possibly bradley)

        Great article.

HBO deserves big props if Bradley-Khan happens on July 30th.

This fight was one more nail into the coffin of boxing in the USA.

A snoozer "super-fight" in which one of the participants came in having been whupped by a European in his previous fight and given a gift decision -- any wonder why this turned out the way it did?

Maybe Wlad Klitschko's fights aren't always the most exciting, but at least he usually knocks his opponent out.

This fight was a super-bore and didn't even have a satisfactory conclusion.

I would love to see both Bradley vs. Khan and Alexander vs. Maidana but if Alexander is smart, he steers clear of Maidana. If Khan couldn't deter Maidana from coming forward even after hurting him badly and dropping him in the first round, Alexander has no chance. Except for a few exchanges, Alexander refused to put any mustard on his punches and the way he fights (backing up and flicking jabs) plays right into Maidana's hands. Khan is a much more polished and skilled fighter (and has more heart than Alexander) and if Maidana could still catch Khan, he would definitely catch Alexander and most likely knock him out. I would love to see the fight but Alexander needs some more seasoning and some confidence building fights before feeding him to Maidana. Actually, the best fight of the bunch would be Bradley vs. Maidana but I think we will see Bradley vs. Khan first...

I watched a rerun of the fight again on hbo the other night. Strange that the last headbutt was on alexander's left side and he complained about the pain above his right eye.

I watched a repeat of the fight again the other night on hbo. It was funny listening to alexander's trainer complain to the the referee about the head butts and arguing with the doctor who was trying to look at the cut on alexander.

hopefully khan/bradley gets made, khans has quite of few opponents to choose from, bradley is the best choice...hbo has the entire 140 division while showtime does their little tournaments, its good to have boxing be big on both channels...
