guys like Gasol, Amare, LeBron, Dirk, Aldridge, David West, Josh Smith, etc. can't? Bird put up 10 rpg for his career. Some of these guys have never averaged 10 for a season.

I'm just sayin Bird was a stiff compared to most of those guys listed. I think guys are just too tied up in looking good.

he couldn't compete with the talent he had so he instructed his team to rough the other teams up.
he knew eventually the refs will start swallowing the whistle.

less rebounds to get.
The game was much faster, this is 100% right.
However guys were much better shooters so there really weren't all that many more rebounds. Back in the 80's it wasn't unusual for NBA scores to be 137-133 night in and night out.
In fact, In 1981-82 the Denver Nuggets scored 126.5 ppg and gave up 126. They scored over 100 points and gave up more than 100 points in all 82 games that season.
Here are a couple scores from that season.
@ Utah, L 148-151
vs Utah W 154-138
vs Seattle W 144-142
I looked at the season leaders for 81-82 and only Moses Malone averaged more than 12 Rebounds per game.
Bird was 7th in the NBA that year, ahead of Robert Parish, the Celtics center.
Magic Johnson was 12th in the NBA in rebounding that year.
Kareem Abdul Jabbar was 19th.
