  • Comments Thread For: Macklin To Retain McGirt, Vows To Continue Title Journey

Birmingham’s Matthew Macklin fell just short when challenging consensus middleweight king Sergio Martinez at New York’s Madison Square Garden last night when the 29-year-old’s trainer, Buddy McGirt, withdrew the challenger from the fight after two knockdowns late in the eleventh round. Macklin rose to his feet both times only for McGirt, a former world champion, to pull the plug on the contest during the minute break between the eleventh and twelfth.

Chavez is too big for good middleweights, because if they are good enough to beat him they should be fighting at 168 instead. well that's according to HBO.

Martinez wasn't put on a backside, his glove touched the canvas.

mcgirt sucks. honestly!! only trainer i notice that stops fight well before his fighter is ready to go. nacho would never do that nor would the garcia'. he panicks to soon and doesnt give his fighters a chance to go out and try to win.

Yup. Macklin Tweeted that both his brother and manager wanted McGirt to stop the fight. It was basically his entire corner that wanted the fight stopped, not just McGirt.

Matt should try and move down to 154 and go after some JMW titlists.

that's interesting. he said in an interview they stopped it and told him he was already down like 2 points or something, that he needed to knock martinez down again and that wasn't going to happen. nothing but respect to macklin and his corner, matt fought his heart out. him and mcgirt can only get better. good luck to them.
amazing sig btw. ran out of green k for the day, but nice...
