  • Comments Thread For: Barker's Corner Man: Sergio Martinez Showed His Age

As a corner man for Darren Barker on Saturday night, Joey Gamache, the former lightweight champion, got a good look at Sergio Martinez. Gamache was busy in Atlantic City, helping four different boxers achieve victories in three of their fights. One of the fighters he guided to a win was Andy Lee, who won an impressive decision against Brian Vera. As a result of the win, Lee has been mentioned as a possible opponent for Martinez and his WBC Diamond middleweight title. While Gamache was admiring of Martinez’s effort- he stopped Barker in the 11th round- he also saw some flaws. The normally bubbly Martinez labored against the defensive-minded Barker, working harder than he usually does. [Click Here To Read More]

Why would his corner man say this?

Wouldn't he want top say "we fought the best Sergio".

Way to devalue your guys effort.

what great objectivity & unbiased commentary from the man in the corner or two men wanting to rival martinez.....*yawn*

His boy got ktfo by way of accumulation after being on defense all night. What does he think would've happen had barker opened up??

Answer: Sergio would've opened a Giant can of "whoop ass" on that boi & really showed his age...looking like a father chastising his son.

Martinez overlooked Barker, took him lightly.....AND had an "off" night. It happens.

Nobody gives this guy respect. "he showed his age, but he still KTFO of my fighter" I just think that Barker is better than everyone thought he was and he showed it. Sergio is getting older, no doubt. 50 plus fights take a toll.

This is funny. The corner man is basically discrediting his fighter Darren Barker for putting up a good effort against one of the best fighters in the sport. Martinez KO'd this guy who broke his nose and was mostly on defense using a good jab. What's up with Boxing fans nowadays? Martinez took care of business and I'm sure whoever he fights next will get beat as well. Just because a fighter has difficulty in the ring against a fighter don't make him a bad fighter ESPECIALLY when he adjusted and got the KO.

Why would you say that when your guy got KTFO? He's just making Barker look bad by saying this.

It's stated in the article that Gamache was pretty much a late volunteer to work in Barker's corner who asked for his help the week of the fight. He's more involved with Andy Lee who is one of the candidates for the next shot at Martinez.

I think one of the reasons that Gamache may have taken the job was to get a good look at Martinez and any possible weaknesses that they could use against him.
