  • Comments Thread For: Abregu Showers Down Argentine Power at Turning Stone

By Jake Donovan - Less than 24 hours after a title fight in Japan produced a strong candidate for Upset of the Year, an equally shocking result helped revive an otherwise sluggish HBO telecast on Saturday evening.

Luis Carlos Abregu scored two knockdowns en route to a stunning 7th round stoppage of previously unbeaten Thomas Dulorme at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, New York. The bout topped a tripleheader which also saw Karim Mayfield and Miguel Vazquez post wins in less memorable fashion.

As was the case for countryman Luis Orlando del Valle four weeks ago, Dulorme entered his HBO debut as a highly touted prospect from the boxing rich island of Puerto Rico. The opening two rounds saw flashes of potential brilliance as Dulorme took the lead against Abregu, whose lone network appearance was a points loss – the only of his career – to Tim Bradley more than two years ago.

The tide dramatically turned in round three when Dulorme hit the deck for the first time in his career. Abregu rode out an incoming jab, throwing a right hand over the top to catch the Puerto Rican flush on his jaw. Dulorme staggered around before eventually flopping to the canvas.

A second knockdown appeared to come later in the round, but was waved off as a slip. It hardly mattered, as Dulorme was still on unsteady legs and suddenly evened up on the scorecards after building an early lead.

The middle rounds saw Dulorme bounce back, though never to the point of convincing anyone – least of all his opponent – that he was in control of the fight. This much was proven as Abregu power punched his way back into the lead in round six, this time never looking back. [Click Here To Read More]

Will Tim Bradley rematch Abregu? Or will he prefer to sit at home like he's been doing?

Dulorme showed he's still sort a green cause Abregu's defense ain't all that & Dulorme should have thrown the straight right or left(he changed from orthodox to southpaw) & fallowed by the hook cause that combination worked for Irvin García when he fought Abregu & wobbled Abregu a couple of times & even had him down a couple of times until Abregu knocked him down at the end of the 4th & the ref stopped it(bad stoppage) & Dulorme has way more skills than García but didn't seem to put them in full effect Saturday night & neither did he take the shots well..Now Dulorme needs to go back to the drawing board & correct his mistakes & see what happens in the future..& for Abregu this was a great victory cause almost everyone was drawing him off before the fight even started & now he's back on track..Good win for Abregu..

I was suprised at times when Dulorme changed his stance it actually worked. But the factor was that right. If he had a tighter defense things would of been interesting but he's only 22 and evolving.Abregu vs Alexander sounds good to me.

Great career reviving fight for Abregu. As for Dulorme, now we shall see what he is made of Nonetheless, after the shock and disgust of yet another of our prospects getting derailed, I prefer this scenario than the alternative of soft opposition after soft opposition to build paper champs that is the norm these days.

As for my take on Durlome, he was shell shocked and it disturbed his ability to make in game adjustments. He should have unloaded while in the southpaw stance which was a decent move but failed to fully commit. He seemed bewildered.

I agree with you...the cherry picking to build resumes nowadays it's alredy annoying...who will predict that dhulorme won't be ready..abregu is a decent fighter but not a world beater..it's not like they set the kid with the lions...I just find out something bad for dulorme in that fight..you can teach defence to somebody but you can't teach them to have better chin..

he could work on getting a better chin. it can get stronger. will see if it works with Khan after he uses Virgil's machine.lol. the kid just didn't think in that ring and that is the major flaw I saw last night. The kid is book smart but not really a fighter at his core. Abregu was a good fight for him that he should have been able to beat but didn't. All the complaints that he was thrown to the wolves etc. is nonsense. no disrepect to those who think that but in reality it was a good test to check his realness and he failed big time....
