Halili Beer came out in the early 60's, its key market being in
            Manila and Southern Tagalog.

It got amazing word of mouth. How much of the hype was a
backlash against San Miguel's monopoly, I'll never know, but
my father (RIP) said it was just as good, if not better than
San Miguel Pale Pilsen. Halili also marketed soft drinks such
as Goody ("Thirst come, Thirst served") Root Beer.

SMB promptly bought out the company and buried its brands.

Lucio Tan's Asia Brewery had better luck challenging SMB, in
            the early 1980's.

As for Corona, you can get it in many restaurants and liquor
stores. Rustan's Grocery used to carry it. I don't understand
why it gets a lot of buzz, as it's actually kind of meh to me.

Actually, it's the surname of the company founder,
ex-Gov. Fortunato F. Halili, famous for getting the
province of Bulacan back on its feet after WW2.

                wrt Corona beer...

Went for groceries an hour ago and picked this up
just for the sake of this thread. Note the price (P91).
I'll probably use it to catch garden snails and slugs.

I've spent a lot of time trying beers in every place where they brew the best beers in the world. The best brewers are in Belgium. They do a lovely job of brewing beers over there. The Little Belgium has over 450 different beers to choose from. They have been experimenting and refining the technique and ingredients for centuries.

Philippine beers and all the other beers of the world pale in comparison to what Belgium has to offer.
