Boxing will DIE if the young lions (juanma, berto, valero, alexander, bradley, ortiz, etc...) start following the lead of FMJ and make boxing all about "da money" and not about the love of the sport.

If it was dying there wouldn't be cards every weekend all across the country and numerous fights on basic cable and premium networks.

It's not dying, but Floyd and Pac just gave it a swift kick in the testes.

I suggest if you haven't clicked the links to these other forums to read the comments, do so. Its very interesting/entertaining to see what people that aren't huge boxing fanatitics say about the topic.... (we're on a boxing forum for ****s sake, we clearly have a bias)

Obviously the sport is big enough worldwide to support fights at the professional and amateur level, gain enough viewers through the gate to support large and small events, and have enough home viewers to support television broadcasting. Do you think HBO and Showtime air boxing out of the kindness of their hearts? Heck no, boxing for them draws and keeps subscribers. If it didn't they wouldn't spend the money producing it. Obviously the sport is still big enough to keep these 2 large influential television networks dishing out millions for boxing every year.

And that's just in the United States. The gate sales and TV ratings are higher in some other countries.

Boxing isn't "dying" when the best don't fight the best. That's all media hype. Are you going to stop watching now? Is even the current casual fan going to stop watching? Sure it hurts gaining new fans, but that isn't killing the sport. I think the biggest harms to boxing are the same problems there have been since it gained widespread popularity (bad decisions, dishonest promoters, government interference, etc). I, like many fans, would love to see big fights on free tv or standard cable but the market will not support that at this point in time.

People act like there was a "golden age" of boxing, but when was it? The same problems haunted the sport in your definition of the "golden age" as they do now. Enjoy the sport now, and anticipate the future. It's great now and it will be great tomorrow, next year, and 20 years from now.
