  • Does strength enhance punching power? Or not?

    Like why is it that George forman hits harder than Tyson despite weighling less than Tyson (in his prime) and being much slower than Tyson?

    Is it because he was naturally strong and Tyson is not?

      True power you either have it or you don't.

      Strength will help you a bit, IMO it mostly helps when grinding it out, inside fighting, thsts when a stregth differece between opponents can really change things.

      But if you look at the way Tommy hearns right hand destroyed opponents, that's natural ability, can't work for that.

        endurance is more important in boxing

        If you can throw the big shots, then good. What matters more is how many times you can throw those shots without losing steam.

        Ko shots happen with timing or luck.

          It can improve your punching power a little bit (as long as you maintain good form) but you're either a big puncher or you're not.

            also, what the hell makes you say tyson isnt strong lol

            he could break a normal man's ribs with one shot

                Tyson was easily manhandled in the clinch by guys like Holyfield, Lennox, Francias, etc, explosive power yes, strength no.

                  Look at Tim Bradley. Dude looked like a mini-body builder vs Manny. And yet he was still throwing pillows.

                  I agree that you're pretty much either born with it or not. It's like arm strength with a quarterback. You can lift all day every day and it still won't turn you into a prime Dan Marino. Look at a guy like Matthew Stafford...his arms aren't huge, in fact they're pretty normal for a guy his size. Yet he has one of the strongest arms in the NFL. Born with it.

                    Strength training helps. Eventually you get to power training, which is more specific to boxing. Also helps to have a tight fist, big hands, heavy bone density, timing, accuracy, speed, and also if they don't see it coming and can't prepare for it. Speed and power can both be taught and trained for, but as someone said before, you're not going to change from Mayweather pop to Tyson power.
