I believe based on marketability, he got the deal. Tickets went up during Linsanity and possibly sales of jerseys too.

that 3rd year is the reason the Knicks backed off and brought in Felton

the $15mil he was due that year would have cost the Knicks around $40mil when that super tax comes into play

Why are y'all making a big deal out of this? Black players get passed on all the time.

Lin is a straight up bum...paying him anything higher than veterans minimum is too much. Dude is straight up garbage. Not even a top 20 pg in the league.

Lin should just go to where the money is. If the Knicks signed all of those PG's then forget about them.

As much excitement, media pandemonium and fanfare as Lin brought to end a horrid start by the Knicks he's an unproven commodity on the court.

              25 games doesn't equate to 25mil. in salary, Just doesn't !!! (40 Mil.Overall)

We sign Kidd to mentor Lin for a few seasons only to Have Houston up the ante after doing so ? So yes "Houston we have a problem" !!!

Can't remember Bird rights backfiring on a team as it has the Knicks ?

I don't blame Lin for making the most of his opportunity but don't talk to me about Bird Rights !!!

Bird rights should give a team the opportunity to trade the asset at fair market value not turn over those rights to the highest bidder !!!

Oh well Knick fan has survived a lot worse so on to next season !!!

Players in the Knicks who objected to Lin's contract don't understand business. He may not be the best player but he makes the team money and also he always said it was a team effort in the interviews. He seemed humble to me.

If the man is offered 25 Mil over 3 years, grab it. If any of you mofo's were offered 25 mil for 3 years, none of you would be complaining.

Lin's popularity made the Knicks a lot of money. Look at what Forbes forecasted he made them. 10-20 Mil last year.

The Jeremy Lin hysteria, or “Linsanity” as it became known, officially took the world by storm on February 42012. The Knicks had just dropped 11 of their previous 13 games, and all hope appeared to be lost for the season. Enter the 6’3 Asian-American, Jeremy Lin, who had 25 points, 7 assists, and 5 rebounds in a 99-92 win over the Nets. Two nights later, Jeremy Lin’s fan base grew along with his totals. In a victory over the Utah Jazz, Lin scored 28 points while dishing 8 assists.

With Lin running the point, the orange and blue would win their next five games, highlighted by a buzzer-beating win at Toronto, bringing New York back into the playoff conversation. His jerseys and other apparel flew off the shelves, and ticket prices skyrocketed, as fans wanted any piece of Linsanity they could get their hands on.

According to Forbes, Lin was poised to boost the Knicks’ revenue by $10-20 million last year due to merchandise and playoff revenue. In addition, Madison Square Garden has seen its market cap grow by $600 million since Linsanity began. Some may look at these numbers and say of course the Knicks should keep Jeremy Lin. But, the Houston Rockets, with their outrageous offer, have changed the money game in regards to Lin.

According to the Forbes story, Lin would have boosted the Knicks revenue in the coming 2012-2013 season by $25-$50 million above what it would be without the Lin affect on merchandise and ticket sales. Over the course of his contract, that comes out to roughly $75 million to $150 million in value. So, yes, Lin’s off the court value exceeds the massive luxury tax hit the Knicks would face. But what about his on-the-court value?

Regardless of Lin’s stats, the Rockets offered Lin a $25.1 million deal, which is incidentally how much NBA great Kobe Bryant makes in one year, for more than just his shooting skills. The Rockets, who famously drafted Asian big man Yao Ming, have a big Asian-American fan base and the deal is for Jeremy Lin the commodity, not for Lin the athlete.

The Linsanity, however, isn’t just marketable to the Asian American community. Lin is marketable to people from all walks of life because we can all see a bit of ourselves in him. People gravitated towards the unlikely success story of an undersized basketball player who was offered no athletic scholarship out of high school, went undrafted out of college, was sent to the NBA Developmental League three times, and was cut by two NBA franchises.

Maybe so but Linsanity makes money. You think David Beckham (Not sure if you know him) is good now? Nope, but he is World famous and he makes people money on his marketing side.

Some people just make money. Do you think a fighter like Mayweather deserves 50 Mil compared to someone who works hard such as Salido who probably has a few 100 K max? Marketing is where the money is at.

When Lin up against the Heat the first time Bron and Wade didn't get put on him once.

Rio and Cole were and they took him out of his game badly.

I'm not saying he sucks because of that because any player is allowed a few bad games in a season.

That contract is too much though.

Lin ain't worth the money NY would've had to pay him in the long run. It would've just added on to the bonehead moves the Knicks have made for years now minus getting Carmelo Anthony (which I think they gave up too much for anyway, but hey...)
