Apparently GTA ONline has launched but is very buggy, and people cant even start the initial race you are introduced to.

Rockstar warned everyone: This is effectively a mass open beta.-Rockstar

There are so many people trying to log on right now that they are adding servers and tweaking things as we speak... so patience is key.

It will eventually get worked out, but it will take some time.
