  • Comments Thread For: Schaefer Confirms Canelo-Lara is Non-Title, Details

Golden Boy Promotions CEO, Richard Schaefer, confirmed to BoxingScene.com that Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (43-1-1, 31KOs) vs. WBA 'regular' junior middleweight champion Erislandy Lara (19-1-2, 12KOs) is a "done deal." The Showtime Pay-Per-View fight is taking place on July 12th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. It will be Canelo's third consecutive fight at the venue.

Lara has already been pulled from a scheduled May 2 defense against former IBF champion Ishe Smith, which was booked at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. A new opponent is being pursued for Smith.

So it's a 10-round fight? That kind of blows.

        Trout, Mayweather, Angulo, Lara.

I am actually surprised by Canelo's competitive spirit. After being brought along on a diet of mis-matched opponents, he has stepped up his game remarkably. All the more refreshing in this era of "boxing is a business".

Make the best fights and the money will be there.

Why would it have to be a ten round fight? There are many non-title fights fought over twelve rounds. And it can still be a title fight, for Lara's side, if he pays the fees.

Non title fights don't have to be 10 rounds.
