  • Comments Thread For: Pacquiao-Rios: Genaro Rodriguez Tabbed as Referee

Genaro “Gino” Rodriguez has been appointed as the referee for the “Clash in Cotai” between “Fighter of the Decade” Manny Pacquiao and former world champion Brandon “Bam Bam” Rios in the “Clash in Cotai” Macau on November 24.

WBO president Francisco “Paco” Valcarcel announced that the Chicago, Illinois based Rodriguez who had previously served as third man in the ring when Brian Viloria lost his WBO/WBA flyweight titles to Juan Francisco Estrada in the same venue last April 6 and also handled the WBO minimumweight title fight when Filipino Merlito “Tiger” Sabillo won by an 8th round TKO of Luis De La Rosa of Coombia last March 9 would handle the Pacquiao-Rios showdown while Asia Pacific vice president Leon Panoncillo will be the official fight supervisor. "Gino" (as you call him) was the ref in the Zou Shiming pro debut... Arum seems to trust "Gino"...

ref won't have much to do in this fight
just a matter of stepping in once someone starts taking a beating
since it's expected to be an action fight, he'll let it go long as he can
if Pac has to lose, fine, but he better not get stopped prematurely

Don't worry, He's only there to count 1 to 10 when RIOS is on the floor!

He needs to do what Laurence Cole didn't do for Margo. Protect the fighter if his own corner doesn't. Rios is going to take massive punishment, win or lose.

In total agreement with this. If Pacquiao recovered 100% after the brutal KO by JMM then Rios is going to get a lot of punishment and hopefully the referee would be able stop the fight in case that the fight gets lopside in favor of Manny thus preventing another massacre as it happened with Margo.

Cole was and is a terrible ref. It doesn't take much to be better than that guy.
