Its more or less what Martian stated.

The figureheads that he speaks of are the family of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). To be more precise, his grandchildren. Shias have an ancestral link to those who were involved in their killings. They later accepted Islam but kept the grievance going through self harm. At the time they were pretending to be Muslim to get close. Which, as I have stated, self harm is severely forbidden in Islam.

I haven't studied to deep into their beliefs but forgiveness for their ancestral sins would most likely be key in their reasoning for it.
