Barrera fails in Khan fight bid

Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera has failed in his bid to force British boxer Amir Khan into a re-match.

The Mexican suffered a fifth-round technical stoppage against Khan having been cut badly in opening stages of the fight in Manchester in March.

Barrera's camp argued that the lightweight contest, an eliminator for a WBO world title shot, should have been declared a no-contest.

But the WBO have upheld the result sparing Khan from a re-match.

WBO rules state that a fight is only declared a no-contest in the case of an accidental foul if it is stopped before the end of the fourth round.

Having been cut as early as the first, Barrera battled on with blood pouring down his face until the fourth, at which point referee Dave Parris asked the ringside doctor to take a look at the cut.

But after inspection the fight continued however, after another round the bout was eventually stopped by the doctor.

And with the cut deemed to have come from an accidental clash of heads, it went to the scorecards, with Khan ahead on all three (50-44 and 50-45 twice).

"Amir Khan will not have to give a rematch to Marco Antonio Barrera following the World Boxing Organisation's enquiry into the 14 March bout at the M.E.N Arena in Manchester," said Khan's promoters.

"Don King (Barrera's promoter) requested that the fight be declared a no contest.

"But as the result of the contest is within the jurisdiction of the Host Commission (British Boxing Board of Control), they determined that the rules of the contest had been followed and there was no error by the referee in stopping the contest."

Khan, a silver medallist at the 2004 Olympics, is preparing for his WBA world light-welterweight title fight against champion Andreas Kotelnik at London's O2 Arena on 27 June.
