You cant denounce religon as a whole because of the acts of a few people, the majority of religous people wouldnt condone these kinds of acts, let alone partake in them. These kind of things happens whether religon is involved or not. Women can be stoned and beaten in some places if their found "not" to be a virgin. The only reason this is of any significance to you is because it was done in the sake of a religous belief.

Secondly, they should have chosen a better day job than witchery, India's got tons of IT jobs to go around.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Religion, it's the "Whackos" of the world who use it in a shameful and disgraceful manner to voice their agenda. The Almighty God in Heaven will sort out these "Weirdos" and will punish them accordingly. JAT

                    No true scotsman?

You cant denounce religon as a whole because of the acts of a few people
In the absence of religious people denouncing these acts I think that yes, you can. The big problem is that if your religious belief allows for the existence of witches then it's hard to criticize people for abusing those accused of witchcraft.

the majority of religous people wouldnt condone these kinds of acts, let alone partake in them
The people beating these women are not religious extremists, they are poorly educated and frightened people whipped into a murderous frenzy by their religious leaders.

Ordinary people enable and condone the abuse of those accused of witchcraft precisely because of their religious belief.

These kind of things happens whether religon is involved or not.
People stone, beat and abuse witches when religion is not involved? There are secular witch-hunts? Richard Dawkins casts counter-curse spells to protect him from evil?

                    Think. Please.

Women can be stoned and beaten in some places if their found "not" to be a virgin.
That sounds horrible. How could you possible justify such a horrendous act? Ooooh wait... you just say it's what god wants.

Here's an example of how religious people attempt to circumvent the rules of law in the United States:

                    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worl...cide-fate.html

A convicted murderer faces execution in Texas after jurors consulted the Bible while deliberating on his sentence...

...while deciding whether he should be given the death penalty, jurors consulted the Bible. Four jury members admitted that several copies had been in the jury room and that highlighted passages were passed around.
Somehow copies of the bible found their way into the jury room, a place from which ANY material unrelated to the case is legally barred. And these bibles had passages highlighted, including this one:

And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.
Now I disagree with capital punishment on general principle but if you are in favour of the death penalty then this should be troubling. A death sentence was handed down by the jury but is likely to be overturned in the supreme court because of blatant contravention of the Establishment clause and contravention of the rules surrounding material allowed in the jury room.

How can a millenia old book be considered to be relevant material for a modern criminal case?
