  • Comments Thread For: A Line at a Time… “Thunder” Still Doesn’t Belong

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - Upon getting word last week that my colleagues in the Boxing Writers Association of America elevated Arturo Gatti to “Hall of Famer” status, my initial reaction was… well, let’s just say I wasn’t happy.

It’s not that I don’t think Gatti was a swell guy and it’s not that I’m not sad about his premature demise. I’m sure he was kind to old ladies and loved cuddly animals – which is as good a barometer as any – and I feel sympathy for those who grieve when anyone dies, regardless of the circumstances involved.

But suffice it to say for writing purposes that I’m glad I had something else – namely one of the most stunning big-fight endings I’ve ever seen – to occupy my time last week.

Otherwise, it could have gotten a mite ugly in these parts.

On that topic, and before we get too much further, here’s where it might be appropriate – in the interest of saving me a ton of subsequent email and other communication – to indicate that this is a column, an opinion piece and not a straightforward news account. [Click Here To Read More]

Floyd sucker punched Gatti which prompted a pre mature stoppage. Floyd didn't want none of Gatti at lightweight.

He did sucker-punch him but Gatti was so punch-drunk at that stage of his career he hardly noticed.

Anyhow, I don't know why all these writers are kicking up such a fuss, it was their body who inducted him and who cares anyway, a fighter like Gatti gave more than enough to the sport.

Btw, the "handbag strap" line in the article is in poor taste.

What is the point in this article?? Its neither funny or informative. Lyle fitzsimmons is a f uc k ing di ck head. Maybe gatti wasnt a great but your colleagues voted him in so to make a stupid article and having a little pop with " his old lady killed him" makes you a massive c u n t!

Lyle, if you were at a table having that conversation with guys like Robinson and Hagler (and anyone else you bring up to make yourself sound smart) and you were coming out with that kind of hypocritical tripe as in this article, then Robinson and Hagler would stand you up, give you a fresh one across the chops and escort you outside while Nat Fleischer revoked your BWAA credentials.

You could apply the same criticism to a few members of the IBHOF. You also point to Gattis connections, but which fighter hasn't used them in the same way? Boxing has always been a "who you know" business, particularly in golden age of the sport, so stop with that pathetic nonsense.

This is one of the worst articles I've ever read and I don't even think Gatti should have gotten in.

He's right that Gatti doesn't belong in the Hall. But how the heck is Nonito Donaire not in his top 10 PFP while Wlad is?
