  • Iranian jets 'fired on US drone'

Iranian fighter jets shot at an unmanned US drone during a routine surveillance mission over the Gulf, Pentagon officials have said.

The defence department said the drone was not damaged in the incident, which it said took place in international air space on 1 November.

Pentagon spokesman George Little said the president had been informed.

Last year, the Iranians captured a US drone they said had invaded their air space and refused to give it back.

The Americans said the drone had malfunctioned.

After the latest incident, Mr Little said the US would continue surveillance in the area.

"The United States has communicated to the Iranians that we will continue to conduct surveillance flights over international waters over the Arabian Gulf," he said.

Mr Little insisted that the drone had never been into Iranian air space.

According to the Pentagon, two SU-25 jets intercepted the Predator drone and fired "multiple rounds".

They missed their target, and the drone was guided back to base.

Defence officials have a policy of not commenting on surveillance missions, but said they would give details this time because of media reports about the confrontation.

Why are the drones so close to Iran? Trying to instigate a damn war I feel. How would the US feel if Iranian planes were near the US, even in International air space.

Can't blame Iran for shooting at drones that are close to there country those things are responsible for a lot of civilian deaths and casualties.

In Pakistan alone between June 2004 and mid-September this year the U.S is responsible for the deaths of between 474 and 881 civilians, including 176 children. The figures have been*assembled by the Bureau of Investigative Journalism, which estimated that a further 1,300 individuals were injured in drone strikes over that period. Although the true number is likely higher.

iranians downed drones before. why is this such big news?

it's normal for a country to shoot at spy planes in or near their airspace no?

btw why would iranians send su-25?

su-25 is a ground attack plane. it's russian version of our a-10 thunderbolt. it's armored and designed to kill tanks.

good for them. the US has killed thousands of their own and continues to meddle in their business. The Iranians are only acting appropriately to how they are being treated.

Israel, India, Pakistan can have nukes. The Chinese, who are far worse a threat to the whole world have nukes.

Well within their right to target unmanned aircraft approaching their airspace.
              PERIOD!!!

The US would have done the exact same thing ....
Bigger question: Why is this even an issue, did the military expect a parade to greet these drones

Isn't unmanned drone a little redundant? Second, if this is news, why are we just hearing about it now? (after the election)
