Both are great movies but it has to be Shawshank for me.

both academy award winners, weren't they?

i'll go with cuckoo's nest, though, Jack Nicholson is a ridiculous actor who can carry a movie scene,

          i thought so too...

andy dufresne was almost without a flaw and was just too good to be true...

randal mcmcurphy was obviously flawed... he is manipulative and childlike in demeanor... to cut it short, he is more like a human being than dufresne was...

"cuckoo's" was also superior when it comes to portraying the "establishment..." it was able to showcase how ill an institution is without really being evil in contrast to shawshank's prison... milos forman's resistance to make the mental institution a place of obvious wickedness as with "shawshank" should be commended... yes, its still hell, but very much laid back and subtle... less is more so to speak...

one flaw with cuckoo's was it's failure to provide insight why nurse ratched was the way she was... there was no back story or some narrative device to make the audience know the reason how she became wicked like that... at least in shawshank, the evil warden was shown that his evil was motivated by greed and power... shawshank is slightly better in that regard...

          great stuff these two films...

You aren't asking which was a better film overall.

the console for spraying water was the metaphor of the "establishment" in cuckoo's...

mcmurphy was unable to uproot it, but the giant native american did...

the scene that showed where it was being uprooted was pretty damn powerful...
