Why do they oppose science to religion? I dont' get it, religion was useful in a lot of ways. Without the muslim conquests and the crusades, renaissance wouldn't have happened in Europe. The knowledge of ancient greeks, indians, chinese and new discoveries of arabs have been very precious.
Without crusades = no modern science. Even Columbus was motivated by religious purposes when he discovered America. His approach was the approach of a crusader.

I think religion is an important part of human history we can't deny.
A lot of great scientists are religious too.
