Mayweather is already the best of his era and second ONLY to Ray Robbinson

That's right. If Floyd fights in 09 i wish all the best for Cotto in 08.. If Cotto could add Williams, DLH and Citron (maybe too much for 1 year) to his resume then a fight with Floyd would be great and really establish Floyd up that path to greatness (althought i believe he's already there)Mayweather just doesn't have anyone near his level of achievement in boxing today. Beating Cotto, Williams and Margarito would be good but if one of them beat all of the others, for example Cotto beats Williams and Margarito, that would turn it into a GREAT fight and a GREAT win for Mayweather.
That's why I agree with Mayweather, he should take a break. Lets see if Cotto will be able to establish himself as a true great by beating the other welterweights. If they fought right now it wouldn't be that big. People wouldn't give much credit to Mayweather for beating Cotto.Comment

Note on Ray Leonard: I don't appreciate his style. I know what he's acomplished and i respect him and what happened to him. Surely one of the greatest comebacks in the history.. But he was hit too often, his defense wasn't all great. Technically he was light years behind Mayweather too. You can compare Mayweather with a young Roy Jones with the defense... from Ali.Comment

His defense was pretty good actually and whenever he did get hit other than the comeback he took it well. He had fast feet and fast hands and he was just as good a technical boxer as Mayweather was as well as being more powerful but thats due to his natural size.Note on Ray Leonard: I don't appreciate his style. And about Sugar Ray Robinson, I'll list the opposition he has beat:
Marty Servo: he was a welterweight world champion and Robinson beat him in his 24th fight as a pro.
Fritzie Zivic: a veteran of boxing and a welterweight world champion, had more fights than most boxers today have thrown punches. Robinson one of the only men to TKO Zivic.
Jake LaMotta: he was a great middleweight champion who beat the great Marcel Cerdan. Robinson beat him 5 times and even stopped him, something that was thought couldn't be done.
Henry Armstrong: he held the featherweight, lightweight and welterweight titles at the same time and almost won the middleweight title. Certainly one of boxing's p4p greatest fighters ever.
Tommy Bell: Robinson won the welterweight world title from him with a decision.
Kid Gavilan: One of Robinson's toughest foes, the unstoppable Gavilan had two great fights with Robinson but lost the decision in both. Gavilan was a welterweight world champion.
Carl Olson: A world middleweight champion who also fought for the light heavyweight title. Robinson knocked out the much bigger man.
Randy Turpin: Turpin, the man that finally ended Robinson's winning streak lost the rematch and the middleweight world title to Robinson by a TKO
Rocky Graziano: The Rock had 3 great fights with Tony Zale and became the world middleweight champion in the second fight. Graziano knocked down Robinson in the 3rd round but got knocked out by Robinson in the same round.
Joey Maxim: The light heavyweight champion Joey Maxim was losing on all scorecards until Robinson, exhausted from the intense heat, retired on his stool in the 13th round. Impressive performance by Robinson but couldn't get the victory this time.
Gene Fullmer: Fullmer won the middleweight title from Robinson in their first fight and walked through his punches without flinching. Robinson turned the tables in their rematch unleashing one of the most beautiful left hooks in the history of boxing and knocked the unknockoutable man out cold, flat on his back.
Carmen Basilio: One of the most exciting fighters ever, a man who truly hated Robinson (because Ray refused to shake his hands once). Basilio beat Robinson by a close split decision in their first fight but lost the second one to Robinson by another close split decision.
Now I could list even more fighters from Robinson's record but I don't think I need to, I hope you people get my point. There will never be another man like Robison, not with the politics we have in boxing. This man gave rematches after rematches to establish his superiority and fought EVERYONE.
I'm sure some of you people will say all those fighters were bums because you don't know them but think twice about it. It might just look to you that way because you don't know s*** about the past era's of boxing.Last edited by TheGreatA; 01-10-2008, 05:51 PM.Comment

And the sad fact is the "bums" of those brutal days would have prolly been successful in these modern times of Boxing. And about Sugar Ray Robinson, I'll list the opposition he has beat:

Is this a joke?Sign. Sounds crazy but the man will prolly never be back into a ring. He said he would comeback in 09 but wasn't sure, depends on how his hands feel. He already said his body has endured alot of wear and tear and he was ready to quit boxing.
I find it funny all the hate on Mayweather here. Why? I mean he's the best fighter you have probably seen live in color and most of you just want him to get a beating. The man started at 130 and in his semi-retirement you're talking about him fighting middleweights? Going to mma? Fighting injured?
Don't get me wrong i'd also would like to see Mayweather fight a couple more just because he puts up such boxing clinics everytime and if you really enjoy boxing... well nevermind... But if the man says quits NOONE can say **** to him. HE'S HIS ****ING OWN BOSS.Comment

that was a GREAT post, i was hoping someone would do this post exactly who knew more about SRR than i do... you should make htis post its own thread so we can go back to it sometimeAnd about Sugar Ray Robinson, I'll list the opposition he has beat:

Even today you see the occasional tough kid get to the top. Gatti won the world title, Baldomir won the world title and Feliciano had a great fight with Cintron. Difference was, almost everyone in those days was tough.
You just knew you were in for a fight because those people were fighting for their money and they would lose that money if they didn't come to fight. The commissions would take peoples purses away if they didn't perform at their best.Comment

I'm sure I'll use it some other day. There will always be people who discredit Robinson and I'll have this post ready just for them.Comment
