Edgar is able to strike against non strikers because he can keep the fight standing up. Doesn't matter how could your striking is, If a fighter cannot defend a takedown or defend the bottom position on the ground, their striking skill won't matter. Thats why so many boxers and kick boxers who come into MMA without a ground game, end up having losing records.

You'll admit a water tight takedown defence and A level (for MMA) stand up will get you a long way in MMA. Someone like Liddel was the archetype for it until he got old and chinny. Most of these fights on the ground end up as choke holds through exhaustion, but guys that are hard to take down are less vulnerable to it so it can be nullified and turned into a straight stand up battle. MMA fans don't even like the ground wrestling, they want to see fists and kicks.
