  • Six-year-old girl handcuffed and arrested for throwing tantrum at Georgia elementary

(CBS/WMAZ) MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. - A 6-year-old elementary school student was handcuffed and arrested Friday after she allegedly threw a tantrum in class.

CBS affiliate WMAZ reports that according to the police report, the girl tore items off the walls and threw furniture. The report also says the girl knocked over a shelf that injured the school principal.

The girl was crying in the principal's office at Creekside Elementary before police arrived. When the officer tried to calm the child, she resisted and was handcuffed.

"Our policy is that any detainee transported to our station in a patrol vehicle is to be handcuffed in the back. There is no age discrimination on that rule," said Milledgeville Chief of Police Dray Swicord.

Police took the young girl to the police station where she was charged with simple assault and damage to property. As she is only 6-years-old, she will not have to go to court.

The girl was also suspended until August.

It's been quite the day for 6-year-olds in the news. Earlier, we told you about the courageous, 6-year-old Texas boy who has already raised $10,000 for his Dad's cancer treatment.

In less positive news, a 6-year-old girl in Georgia was handcuffed by police and charged with assault after throwing a "tantrum" in her elementary school. Local tv affiliate 13WMAZ reports that Salecia Johnson, who is in kindergarten, was detained by police after her alleged outburst.

"Our policy is that any detainee transported to our station in a patrol vehicle is to be handcuffed in the back. There is no age discrimination on that rule," Milledgeville Chief of Police Dray Swicord, told the station.

Swicord said the officer who handcuffed Johnson is not facing an investigation over his actions. Swicord added that Johnson was handcuffed for her safety as well as the safety of others. She was taken to the principal's office after pushing two other students, according to a police report.

"The student was never placed in a holding cell or jail cell and the student's safety was of the utmost importance," Swicord said.

However, Johnson's parents are trying to organize a community protest against the officer's actions, including reported plans to contact civil rights activist and MSNBC host Al Sharpton.

That's crazy. What they should of did is left her in a room until her parents or someone that can control her came. The cops would be the last resort.

She's lucky she didn't get strapped down and electrocuted for 7 hours.

I think anyone who would actually handcuff a little girl probably should have to turn in their badge at just having any shred of manhood.

Calling Al Sharpton too. Better sue the school and make sure the hard working police officer loses his job because you can't raise your children not to act a fool at school....

Then again, if the cop put her in the cop car and left her in there until she calmed down then they would get shyt for that also. If they put her in a holding cell, same thing. Not much options if you really think about it.
