Sure, he could have. It was a very close fight by all accounts, with Cerdan having to retire after his shoulder got messed up from being thrown to the canvas by LaMotta. He fought on well until the 9th when he couldn't throw a punch anymore with it supposedly.

However, he was 33 years old, had 115 fights, had been fighting for 15 years compared to Jake's 28 years, with 80 fights across 7 or 8 years. That may have been significant. We'll never know.
