Damn Jab, way to end the thread in the 1st post.
Was there something going on with Erne's gloves or was it just a freak injury ?.
Lol, let me re-check the chapter in the Gans bio I have and I'll get back with you on this one! I believe it was a freak injury though. I don't recall them saying anything about cheating or such.
Ok, Im back. There were several different reports, one being that the eye had popped out and a doctor had to get in the ring and pop it back in. Another says it was severely cut. The funny thing is Nat Fleischer (the so called leading authority on boxers) labeled Gans a quitter because of this. The funny thing is he would later rate him the greatest of all lightweight and proclaim no man fought a tougher path to the title than any other fighter ever.
Frankie Campbell got killed by Baer. What was interesting was that the doctor reported he had died of multiple hemorrhages . His brain was almost loose from the tissues. This was unreal. Tribute to Baers power.
Hatchetman Sheppard--
"Remember Big Boy Brown, that pawing 260-pound cousin of Joe Louis? Curtis actually crushed Brown's chin so severely that surgeons had to wire the parts together."
Benny "Kid" Paret was a Cuban boxer who won the welterweight title for the first time in 1960, but lost it seven months later when Emile Griffith knocked him out. His last fight against Griffith occurred on March 24, 1962. In the twelfth round of the fight, Griffith hit Paret twenty-nine times in a row, and eighteen times in six seconds, when Paret was lying against the ropes before referee Ruby Goldstein stopped the fight. Paret went into a coma after the fight, and died ten days later.
Billy Collins Jr lost his vision in a fight. His opponent cheated and had removed his padding.
This kind of events make one sad...when someone dies or loses sight, its not okay.
