Eight months. I think my trainer wanted to be sure that I didn't embarass anyone.

Actually 8 mos is reasonable. I feel it depends on how quickly you adapt in training, How late you start, and certainly what kind of athletic background you had before boxing. I cringe at the stories of 2-6 months. But it happens, some are just ready. Maybe you watched and learned a lot about boxing before you hit the gym. I watched every fight I could get my eyes on from the time I was six years old. "not just once. saw every re run" And combining that with an athletic back ground I was ready to fight quickly. 4 months into my training and devestated my apponent. Knocked his headgear sideways, Landed a right flush on the chin and the ref stopped it. But some need more time which isn't a bad idea. I have been pondering the idea of training fighters and think my policy would be similiar to that of Floyd Mayweather Sr.
His guys don't even get to spar in there first year. I don't believe I'd be that extreme, but would go along those guidelines. And any boxer I put in the ring would be well prepared to handle the task.

Not so much. And I was glove-shy for the first 3-4 months. I fenced in college, I've got a sharp eye and I'm pretty strong and I worked hard, but I had some major psychological **** to overcome before I was ready to go full-contact.

So it seems your timing was right on. No rush, no foot dragging either. Fencing and a southpaw, must have a mean parry? From what I know of you Id think you'd be a better boxer then brawler. A counter puching menace of a southpaw with a wicked 1 2 would be my guess

I think you may be right, but I'm not there, yet. I believe that my brawling style developed as a psychological reaction to being afraid of getting hit: falling back on what I know. I have more faith in my physical strength than I do my boxing ability per se, so when I "spool up" or get pressured, I tend to shove my opponent back and beat the **** out of them with shovelhooks and overhands. For awhile they were alternately calling me "Crash" and "Dozer" at my gym.

I'm actually ambidextrous; I fight southpaw b/c I'm left eye dominant.

I'm hoping to learn how to box -- really box -- this year.

i only took 2months but remeber i have grew up around boxing and watched every fight a could so as soon as i got the basics under my belt i knew what i was doing from there on. i think if i wasny brought up around the sport i would have taken a hell lot longer
