  • Cotto v. Martinez' resume and vice versa

How does Miguel Cotto (June 7, 2014) handle Sergio Martinez's 160 resume?
How does Sergio Martinez (June 7, 2014) handle Cotto's 154 resume?
All bouts taking place within context (notice year).

How does each guy win, lose, etc.? What type of opponent would each guy have the most trouble with and why?

    Cotto (2014):
    Cotto v. Pavlik (2010)
    Cotto v. Williams (2010)
    Cotto v. Dzinziruk (2011)
    Cotto v. Barker (2011)
    Cotto v. Macklin (2012)
    Cotto v. Chavez Jr. (2012)
    Cotto v. Murray (2013)

Let's assume a healthy Martinez (2014) fights these opponents at 159:
    Martinez v. Foreman (2010)
    Martinez v. Mayorga (2011)
    Martinez v. Margarito (2011)
    Martinez v. Mayweather (2012)
    Martinez v. Trout (2012)
    Martinez v. Rodriguez (2013)

Cotto would lose to all those guys, but it doesn't mean much because they were all big or at least average sized middleweights in their prime, whereas Cotto is a small jr. middleweight, and was already past his best in 2010. (I know Dzinziruk moved up in weight to fight Martinez, but he was a very tall and rangy jr. middleweight, and didn't look blown up at all at 160.)

The 2012 version of Martinez vs Floyd is a 50-50 fight imo, but Sergio would easily beat everyone else you listed.

That's a very interesting way of viewing things - IMO, it solidifies how effective Martinez has been and how much he's done. It was always my opinion, outside of Lara, Martinez (healthy) would have the ability to give Mayweather his first loss. Martinez arguably would be able to handle all opposition you listed - this includes the rematch with Margarito at that stage.

On the other hand, Cotto would have some difficulty with some of the fighters. While Cotto has been such a great fighter technically and vicserally, his size/height would be a disadvantage in many of those matches.

The middleweights that Martinez fought would all beat Cotto and most of them would knock Cotto out. Martinez would beat all the guys Cotto fought and only Trout and Mayweather would have a chance to go the the whole 12 rounds. Martinez will probably knock Cotto out. Cotto has done nothing to deserve a title shot at 160. He never beat a middleweight and he lost two of his last three fights at Jr. middleweight. It's just a stunt fight for Cotto to say he won a title at a higher weight. If Cotto wins he will drop back down to 154 anyway. Who ever wins they won't fight GGG who I think is by far the best middleweight alive. The fight is at a catch weight of 159 anyway so it's not even a real middleweight fight.

Martinez beats all Cotto's JMW foes except Floyd, and Cotto gets thrashed by all of Martinez' MW opponents

I was with you all the way up until that last statement. When are NSB posters going to get it through their thick skulls that divisions are weight ranges. Anything from 155-160 is an official MW fight.

Martinez is bigger and stronger than Cotto. And of course he is bigger than his former opponents. A prime Martinez would have defeated all the past rivals of Cotto easily, except for Mayweather. (wich I think he would have been the favourite too)

Cotto is just to small to fight Martinez`s former opponents, can anybody imagine a fight between Cotto and Chavez Jr?

So I donīt think this comparison is fair.

Pointless comparison. Cotto is a welterweight. And a blown-up 154lb-er. I mean Chavez Jr is a light-heavy. Pavlik has boxed at light-heavy. Be real man. Martinez is cashing out because he knows Golovkin is a tougher fight with less financial reward.

I don't see how you can compare. How do you think Cotto would do against a series of middleweights?

Just as you could say Cotto is 'welterweight,' you can say Martinez is a JMW since that's where he campaigned most of his career. I think Cotto has spent about as much time at 154 as Martinez has at 160 and like Martinez, I don't think he could make his former weight easily at this point.

Further, if Cotto beats Martinez, he will become the lineal middleweight champion of the world. Therefore, I think it is fair to wonder how a middleweight Cotto (who may or my not become the 160 champ) would fair against his opponent's former middleweight rivals.

On the other side, Martinez fought most of his career at JMW and could have possibly faced many of the same opponents Cotto faced as a JMW. So I think it's an interesting question to ask.
