  • Comments Thread For: Schaefer on The Weight Penalty Clause For Floyd-Canelo

The mega fight between Floyd Mayweather and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has been a hot topic in the boxing world and promises to be one of the more lucrative fights in the sports history. Despite people thinking the fight would be difficult to make, things actually got done pretty quickly and smoothly as both parties were able to come to a mutual agreement on the particulars of the fight.

One of the compromises for the fight was the 152 pound contracted catchweight at which the fight will take place. Team Mayweather made it known that Alvarez had said he would be willing to come down in order to make the fight happen and they took him up on that offer.

No one is going to think about the Catchweight when the fight is about to happen, they'll just know Canelo is over 170 and Floyd is like 150. The same thing happened with Pacquiao-Cotto, no one was thinking about it when Cotto came in big and ready to fight.

Me thinks I see the reason for stamina issues.

Who the fk eats hamburgers before any type of physical activity? Canelo fans gonna start using that as an excuse for the lack luster performance and **** stamina tho.

That is a huge penalty. Bet he does come in at or under 152 lbs.

Well that explains why Canelo fought the Trout fight like he was eating hamburgers the morning of the fight: he was!

I've said it before and said it again: hiring a nutritionist, discovering the importance of cardio and making stamina improvement a big focus of your training camp just a few months before a fight with the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world is not the way you become properly conditioned. It's like saying "I need to drop 40 pounds by summer" - in May.

Frankly, as much as Canelo needs to try to address his stamina problems long-term, it sounds like this has become a huge distraction for his camp. Canelo is not going to go from gassing in the 6th round against Trout with a low work rate to going 12 sweatless rounds with Floyd at a high work rate.

But it doesn't matter: if he can't get to Mayweather in the first few rounds in a way that no other fighter has, it's very unlikely he's going to be able to win the fight anyway. Mayweather's endurance is not in question, and he gets better as the fight goes on because he has his opponent completely figured out by the 4th or 5th round.
