  • Freddie Roach: "The shoulder roll wont work against a southpaw"

David Tyler - Congratulations on Amir Khan's victory over the more experienced Paulie Malignaggi. Your perspective on the fight?

Fred Roach - I was very pleased. We worked hard in training on using the left hand to be more effective. I turned Amir loose in the 11th round and he took care of business.

DT - Is Amir Khan ready to take on the likes of Tim Bradley or Devon Alexander?

FR - I think he is ready. I have only seen Devon Alexander fight once on television and he knocked out some bum. Everyone has been raving about how great he is but he can't beat Amir Khan.

DT - How about Timothy Bradley?

FR - What I would like is for Amir to fight Marcos Maidana next while Bradley fights Alexander and Amir would fight the winner.

DT - Any chance of Amir avenging his only loss with a rematch against Brediss Prescott?

FR - No, the guy has lost two fights in a row. We are leaps and bounds above him at this point. If it was an interesting fight and people would pay to see it then we would consider a rematch but there is no interest in that fight.

DT - Let's switch gears and discuss the Mayweather/ Mosley bout. Did you see any weak spots in Mayweather's style that Manny Pacquiao would be able to utilize in their eventual match?

FR - Mayweather got hit much more than he is use to because he has lost the quick movement that he used to have. I believe that his legs are gone and that made him very hittable. Manny is stronger and faster than Mayweather and if Manny has him in trouble he will knock him out.

DT - I would say that you are inferring that if that had been Manny that buckled his knees in the second round of the fight, then Pacman would have put Mayweather away?

    FR - 100% yes!

DT - Manny has the tenacity of a bulldog and can easily throw more than 100 punches per round. Will that be your strategy against Mayweather?

FR - That's the game plan. I just don't think Floyd is in that good of shape and Manny will eventually wear him down with all the punches.

DT - Were you surprised that Mayweather did not take a round off after absorbing some tough right hands in the second round?

FR - No, because I had predicted that Mayweather would win every round. He did it in a style different than he normally uses but he was very effective with counter punching. Like I have said, he is the second best fighter in the world behind Manny Pacquiao.

DT - Bob Arum has stated that he has a date in November for Manny to fight in Texas Stadium. Arum has said that if the Mayweather fight can't be made, then Antonio Margarito would fight Manny on that date. Your thoughts?

FR - I am not sure. I don't think Margarito has been licensed to fight anywhere in America.

DT - So you are not really looking at a list of potential opponents other than Mayweather?

FR - I am in the dark just like the rest of the fans out there. The negotiations are going on between Bob Arum and Richard Schafer. I like everyone else await the results so I can get Congressman Pacquiao ready for his opponent.

DT - What were your feelings about Manny winning a congressional seat by a landslide?

FR - I am very happy for Manny. I know it's something he really wanted to do and it has to be a great moment in his life. No doubt he will do a really good job.

DT - Will Mayweather's defense work against Manny?

FR - The shoulder roll will not work against a southpaw.

DT - What about the short right cross of Mayweather?

FR - I have a plan to neutralize that punch and we will work on it the minute he starts training for the fight.

DT - Some writers have been quoted as saying that Manny does not have a good enough jab to bother Mayweather. Your reaction?

FR - When you are a southpaw fighting a conventional fighter, the alignment for the jab is not really conducive for that kind of fighting. Manny has a great jab but when you are fighting a right handed fighter, it changes the dynamics of the positioning of the feet so the jab is not really relevant. So whoever is making those kind of statements does not know boxing because they don't understand how southpaws work against right handed fighters.

DT - Some experts have stated that Manny would have to plant himself before throwing his flurries of punches and Mayweather would counter the misses with his right hand. Your feelings?

FR - Bull****! That's incorrect, Manny never plants himself when he throws punches, he has knocked out everyone by throwing punches with movement. Why would he have to plant himself. These so called experts are way off the mark. Movement is the key to the victory. Manny would never sit there in the pocket and trade punches with Mayweather.

DT - After Manny knocks out Mayweather, what's next?

    FR - President Pacquiao.

DT - You have studied films of all the great Welterweights in the history of boxing, like Sugar Ray Robinson, Henry Armstrong, Kid Gavilan, Carmen Basilio, to name a few. How would Mayweather or Pacquiao fare against those fighters?

FR - In every sport world in the world that is measured by speed, power, or size, the present day athletes are better. Why not boxing? I think the fighters of today are the best in the history of boxing.

Too bad Floyds defense has multiple facets and doesn't just use the shoulder roll
