This has been a great rivalry over the years and it promises to continue with such fights as Cintron vs. Margarito looming. Puerto Rico is a very small island but has managed to create some Hall of Fame fighters. Such fighters include Tito Trinidad, Edwin Rosario, Wilfred Benitiz, Sixto Escobar, Hector Camacho, and Wilfredo Gomez. Mexico has given us both quantity and quality. JC Superstar, Lupe Pintor, Cuevas, Salvador Sanchez, Barrera, Morales, Jose Luis Castillo. and the list goes on. The question here is which of these two countries has produced the BEST fighters! IMO Mexico squeezes out an edge in terms of fighters. I’ve heard through the grape vine that Puerto Rico actually has an edge in terms of winners of championship fights amongst Puerto Ricans and Mexicans. I can’t see how that’s the case (Sanchez over Benitez, Chavez over Camacho and Rosario are ones that stand out) but maybe that is true. So who would you take…Chavez or Trinidad!

It could be somehow difficult to determine which country has produced the best fighters, at least in my opinion. To begin with, some rules would have to be established since both, Puertoricans and Mexicans, claim as their own fighters, and for that matter any athlete, whose parents were born in the country. This is good because it demonstrates that both countries are extremely proud of their heritage. Even the historical antagonism brought by the premise is good for the sport because the stereotype of the fighters from Puerto Rico and Mexico is one of true warriors, that even when outclassed, will not accept defeat and will not give up. I think this is the true spirit of the sport, not only skills, but heart. Skills can be nurtured, the heart you have to be born with. As far as which country has the edge in championship fights between them I read an article on a Puerto Rico local newspaper stating that Puerto Rico had the edge but that it was close. I do not know if that is true or not but I am sure that the historians of this site will clarify it. As far a Chavez or Trinidad I have no option but to go with Trinidad. I have nothing but respect for Chavez but not knowing when enough is enough hurts his legacy.

In my opinion this is an issue that can go back & forth forever because of the quality fighters that both countries have produced. I would hesitate to choose one because of me being PR and my wife being Mexican and my son having the best of both worlds... on top of that I think if I chose one I would be forced to sleep on the couch...Lmao...nah but,seriously Moonra69 said it the best. Those 2 blood lines are fire in the sport of boxing.

Puerto Rico and Mexico could exchange "Population Size"
and Mexico would still produce better fighters.
This is going to sound racist, which I am not;
but;
A Mexican can kick a Puerto Rican's ass any day of the week.
