  • Whitaker vs. Chavez: The controversy

I can remember when my dad came home from his friends house shaking his head about the Chavez v Whitaker fight. I was young back then, and all he told me was that Chavez looked confused and was “fortunate” to get a draw. To this day I have avoided watching that fight because I didn’t want to see what happened. Now I’m far away from home (in Iraq) and finally I need to know what happened. Many say that Chavez got “outclassed”, while others say that Whitaker was “on his bike” the whole time. If Whitaker was running around and Chavez was the aggressor....doesn’t this have shades of DLH vs. Trinidad? Tell me if I’m wrong. Also, did Whitaker legitimately lose to Jose Luis Ramirez? Thanks for the history lesson.

It was an outright robbery. Whitaker won that fight fair and square. Chavez was the agressor (he always was), but to say Sweet Pea was running the whole fight is just not fair to him.

I would have liked to see that fight 5 years before and at lightweight. That would have been one for the ages.

Did they ever have a Chavez vs. Whitaker on Legendary Nights?

you should not listen to the ones who told you pea was on his bike all of the fight, cos they forgot to mention that he was constantly countering from that bike and won I don't even know how many rounds... but I guess 10 gives the idea

That wasn't a legendary fight. It was simply one fighter out-doing the other and getting robbed of the fair and square decision..

I don't know about the ramirez fight but looking at boxrec I can tell...

                  1) it was pea 16th pro fight
                  2) ramirez started fighting in france in 86. from then on he never lost a fight in france and lost every fight he fought out of france.
guess where the fight took place? plus the outcome was a split decision, smells fishy doesn't it?

I'd like to see the fight though, cos the above is just malicious guessing

I thought Whitaker did enough to beat Ramirez. It was a shady decision, but I also havent seen the fight in about 12 years.

Whitaker/Chavez was highway robbery. Chavez supporters say that he was out of his prime...but Whitaker would still repeat that same performance at anytime in their careers, with Chavez winning maybe 1 or 2 more rounds. It was a clear Whitaker win.
