The old saying "if it aint broke why fix it". Well in this case, it is broke and it can't be fixed...no matter what your ideal form of govt is. The least corrupt Govt's are in small countries with far less representatives, and a smaller population. I don't agree with Denmark's policies nor would i wanna live there or an environment like that, BUT they put all of their high taxes to full use as intended. That is impossible in a UNITED states. Our territory is too big and that's ok...we don't need to be like Denmrk. We need to be one of the biggest countries with one of the smallest govt's. That's a better goal than trying to perfect our programs and "eliminate waste". How about just cutting it and cap it so no new politician can do whatever it is he/she wants to do.

We already have the so called Mixed Economy, with one half being Welfare, public spending, redistributionism, taxation on every level (Income, property, sales, Death tax), and the other half supposedly being Capitalism. Unfortunately the one half is dominating the other half. That's not Capitalism....Capitalism in practice [not in theory] is more closer to the 1800's to about 1913 with the good and the bad during that time period [there is no utopia]. But even with today's system, the vast majority always blames the little Capitalism/Private sector that we have left when things like 2008 happen, rather than other side of the Mixed Economy spectrum. Therefore we get more and more govt rather than reversing course.

We're taking a few steps back with your last paragraph's statement. There was no SS before the 1930's, and even the 1930's version wasn't as bad as the 1965 amendments added to it, which contributed to the rise in costs for non-elderly private citizens, making them even more dependent on further govt. created assistance because private sector wages can only keep up so much with rise in inflation.

If you like what the UK or Canada or Denmark has...then in short we will have to agree to disagree.

To not bump my thread again. I don't know...Didn't the Spartans kick their weaklings off of a hill? Just kiddin'

It depends. If you're disabled due to military service, then the trade off should be some kind of assistance. That is the govt's primary role, the military, particularly on the Federal side. The fact that healthcare costs are overinflated because of the govt to the point that one depends on govt assistance...is something to be taken into consideration. Everyone looks for the govt benefits, assistance but doesn't question why they're so dependent on it in the first place.
