Boxing 2008 six months evaluations

Posted 07-28-2008 at 02:03 AM by warp1432
6 months have past, here are some of my evaluations.

First off, the top 10 pound for pound as of July 28, 2008:

1. Manny Pacquiao
2. Joe Calzaghe
3. Juan Manuel Marquez
4. Israel Vasquez
5. Kelly Pavlik
6. Paul Williams
7. Antonio Margarito
8. Bernard Hopkins
9. Cristian Mijares
10. Miguel Cotto

I'm kind of uneasy about having Pavlik at 5, but it's just because everyone pretty much lost. Williams hasn't done better work then Pavlik, but he beat Margarito clearly so he deserves to be on there. Margarito obviously beat Cotto. Cotto moves down to 10 for getting knocked out. Hopkins stays at 8 for losing a tight decision to Calzaghe. Mijraes deserves to be on there. R. Marquez and Calderon exit.

Fight of the year (so far): Israel Vasquez-Rafael Marquez 3

No disputing this really. Casamayor-Katsidis comes in second, then Cotto-Margarito, then Marquez-Pacquiao 2.

Fighter of the year: Antonio Margarito.

Wins over Cintron and Cotto. If he racks up another quality win in november he could stay with fighter of the year.

However, if Mijares unifies with the ibf winner, Mijares deserves it by far. First boxer in the lighter weight classes to ever unify 3 titles. He was #31 pound for pound last year according to the ring and now he's #9.

Pacquiao will deserve it, if he beats De La Hoya

Comeback of the year: Nate Campbell

You could say Margarito for this, but not nearly as many people wrote Margarito off after he lost to Williams as people were writing off Campbell against Diaz. If he beats Guzman that may be fighter of the year too.

KO of the year: Edison Miranda KO 3 David Banks

This is probably the toughest to choose because there are very good ones.

Upset of the year: Antonio Margarito TKO 11 Miguel Cotto

This is a hard one too because of have been so many.

Round of the year: Holt vs Torres 2 round 1

No explanation here.

Fights of the month:

January: Alexander Munoz vs Katsugishe Kawashima (GOOD fight)
February: Cristian Mijares vs Jose Navarro
March: Rafael Marquez vs Israel Vasquez 3
April: Chad Dawson vs Glen Johnson
May: Alfred Angulo vs Richard Guiterrez
June: Manny Pacquiao vs David Diaz
July: Antonio Margarito vs Miguel Cotto

And finally...all the fighters that lost their 0s this year:

Miguel Cotto
Juan Diaz
Paul Williams
Michael Katsidis
Andy Lee
Eddie Chambers
Giovanni Segura
James Mcgirt Jr
Chazz Witherspoon
Konstanin Airich
Gavin Rees
Aj Banal
Alonzo Butler
Adrian Hernendez
Omar Salado
Michael Walker
Giusppe toriga
Joachime Alcine
Chris Henry

Probably missed some. Thanks to Texanballer for helping me with that list.

Various thoughts:

-Jim Bagg completely ****s over Nate Campbell in the newest ring issue. It's worth reading, check it out.

-Boxing Digest is a poor man's ring magazine, but it wasn't bad when I picked it up the other day. Gave a great article on super flyweights.

-What are Abner Mares and Victor Ortiz doing next?

-I think my scorecard for Margarito Cotto can be justified. I know a lot of you disagree with me. I think 5-5 is a bit of a stretch and 6-4 margarito is blasphemy. Damn judges. I'll give margarito credit because they didn't matter anyway.

-Other news no one gives a **** abut:

1. Why the **** did they air the baseball HOF on tv today?

2. I'm becoming addicted to texas hold em online. Such a fun game to play.
