Will the medication Dilantin cause a false positive for barbiturates? I had to take a drug screening and it came back positive for barbiturates. I take the anticonvulsant Dilantin. I want to know if the Dilantin could cause this to happen? I don't take anything other than the Dilantin.

When you do a drug screen they do ask about medications that you take both prescribed and otc. You need to let them know that you take Dilantin. And I can not remember where I read it, but I am certain I read that it has potential birth defect and/or should not be handled by women who can become or are pregnant. My menstrual cycle is irregular since February, and I want to know if handling the Dilantin is affecting this.

However, Dilantin saps my energy to the point that yardwork (mowing the lawn with a push mower and weedeating, or cleaning the house) makes me tired for the next two days as if I have run a marathon. Also, my husband is on Dilantin, plus another seizure med, and his energy is sapped even more. We are not overweight. Is it normal for seizure medicines to sap energy?
