View Full Version : How do Filipinos from The Phillipines view Filipinos from The US...?

I'm just curious, because it seems as if Filipinos in the US, give Filipinos from the PI, a hard time...and seems like they renounce them, every chance they get. You've heard all of the FOB talk...and all of that other stuff...

I don't know, I never understood it...I view my countrymen for the most part as my brothers/sisters...and I don't know another race that has such a strong afinity with one another.

For example, I've gotten hooked up at places where there was a Filipino worker, on the simple fact that I too, have Filipino blood in me...and at a lot of the jobs I've had...folks would be like..

' Are you Filipino...? '

And I'd be like...yeah...

' Do we get a discount...? '

And I love that we have such a strong connection like that. I don't see another race like it, as far as that goes...

But I'm just not understanding the animosity between mostly young men, because most of the gang violence involving Filipino's that I've seen, has been Pinoy's from the US, against Pinoy's who are from The PI who came here...

How do you feel about this...?

they are still Filipinos, though they enjoy the place they live in, or are they.

Interesting topic. Well, it is in fact true that we are one of the few races that has strong afinity with one another. Only we, Filipinos, well atleast the true Filipinos, have this trait. And for the gang violence thing.. being a young Filipino myself, I came here like 6 years ago.. I was shocked about what I found out with the Filipinos that was born here in the US. When I was young, I always thought every Filipinos are disciplined and taught how to respect other people by their parents. But not until I moved here. They became more like the "spoiled brat americans". I woulndt blame them though because they live in such environment. I have nothing against Americans or America.. In fact, I love the country and I'm glad I moved here cause there's more money here. But the sad truth is that Filipinos that was/will born here will be more like an American spoiled brat

i was talking to a friend of mine regarding thise. i know peeeps that are born in the states think they hard and all that **** with all their ganbanging **** from there. but nothing beats living in a neighborhood where you dont have to have a gang to know that you will die any minute.

just an example would be our boxers. brian villoria and donaire are prime examples of pinoys growing up in the states. manny pac boom boom etc are prime example of boxers growing up in the PI. if you want a more concrete example there is luisito espinosa, he grew up in tondo and check out how hard he fights.

I also have Pinoy cousins who were born in the States. All I can say is that they are mostly brats who are used to the good life. They've never experienced poverty that's why they're not that hardened compared to the Pinoys of the same age.

I am one of those Pinoys that was born in the states but I am no brat. My mom and dad (dad w/2jobs) worked very hard to provide us with a good life. It is true, we used to dispise those other pinoys coming from the PI. They looked down on us as not real pinoys. We cant speak the language and they had cars in high school while we catch the bus. Though we may not know how to speak or understand the language our family made sure we knew our culture. I for one know how to kill a pig and goat. As we grew older we put our difference aside and hanged out with each other. I am from the same neighborhood were Brian Viloria lives (Waipahu, HI). I envy my fellow pinoys that are in the Phillippines, look at the gorgeous, sexy women you have there.

Good posts fellas.

I guess its fair to say that regardless of which side you're coming from, whether it be a US born Pinoy, relocating to The PI, or if vise versa, there is always that small indifference in between us.

I agree with the fact that most US born Pinoy's have probably had it much easier, from a financial standpoint, simply being because of the amount of opportunities that we have here in The US compared to those in The PI.

But besides the differences in everyday culture, as people, I feel like we are one in the same, and more likely than not, share a lot of the same values and traditions that you do in The Phillipines. The cavaleir attitudes that you might sense from your US born countrymen, may just be from their lack of understanding of your culture, and vise versa.

Well, I guess more often than not, its a Filipino relocating to the states, but what I want to know is, how are American born Pinoys viewed in The Phillipines...?

More often than not your typical Pinoy (Philippine born and raised Filipinos, not including the privileged socio economic upper crust who send their kids to schools like Brent or International School, and spend as much time abroad as they do here) tend to have an inferiority complex when it comes to overseas born and raised hyphenated "Filipinos." They think you're better educated and wealthier. At the same time, they think you're less mannered, materialistic, selfish and less spiritually attuned (meaning, you're not as good a Catholic - btw, this is something the priests preach here all the time). I hesitate to use the term "Pinoy" for anyone who wasn't born and raised here, just because it assumes a certain mindset, preferences and core values - not necessarily better ones, but definitely one you wouldn't be familiar with unless you spent the better part of your life here. It means being more group oriented and less individualistic; being at once deferrential but also distrustful of authority; and having preferences and tastes molded by often times subsistence level personal economies. I don't even consider our super wealthy to be Pinoys. Their tastes are too international and too downward looking with regards to their countrymen. They're more comfortable with escargot with a glass of chardonnay than they are a bucket of boiled snails and a bottle of San Mig. They send their daughters abroad to Spain to find husbands so that each succedding generation looks less and less Filipino.

Are they looked at as snobby, and spoiled...?

Yes. From my perspective, Pinoys and Fil-foreigners have fundamentally different world views. The Pinoy is essentially family and group oriented. Having an overseas cousin over for a month or two is great. Masaya talaga! (A great time!) How do you Fil-Ams feel about sharing or giving up your room to a Philippine cousin for a month or two? Once here, the Pinoy thinks nothing of sharing his/her room or anything else to make the visitor feel welcome and comfortable. The Fil-Am visitor, on the other hand, seems more interested in finding the privacy and space they're accustomed to. So yeah, they're seen as spoiled. A lot of it has to do with how overseas "filipinos" treat their elders. People here are obsessively obedient and respectful of our elders. (This isn't necessarily a good thing. The truth is, the Philippines is poor and corupt because our elders collectively made it that way and are now teaching succeeding generations to not question them, but instead follow in their footsteps.) They automatically do mano po (touching of the forehead to the back of an elders' hand) and would avoid questioning or arguing with something an elder would say. The fil-foreigner on the other hand, doesn't see it as questioning the elder but rather addressing what the elder said. Pinoys see this as arrogant, or the cath all term here "mayabang."

Do you poke fun at them, the same way we do, when a person is new to the US and comes here to live...?

The poking of fun that Fil-foreigners sometimes gets is fundamentally different than the offensive name calling and labelling met by new Filipino immigrants. The poking of fun is a childish attempt to make oneself feel equal to someone he/she perceives as having had more opportunity and is sometimes seen as superior educationally (better English) and materially. The name calling and labelling is a malicious, fear driven attempt to disassociate, belittle or reject someone else who's seen as inferior.

Please, English only ! I don't understand Tagalog, and YES, I am a Pinoy...but a 3rd generation American, so we mostly speak English. But I'd like to hear what you guys have to say.

I couldn't read a lot of the posts in Tagalog earlier in the thread.

Any post in particular you'd like translated? There's a bit much to do all of them.

^ Excellent post Kalbo ! I was actually just thinking about this thread the other day, its 2 years old now, but just in regards to the whole Manny Pacquiao fever.

Like I've stated before, most of the American born Filipinos I know here, will do anything in their power to disassociate themselves from those they label as 'fobs', a lot of the time, even those in their immediate families.

But its so ironic now how everyone conveniently wants to be associated with Manny Pacquiao, for all of the great things he's done not just for boxing, but for Filipinos as a whole.

Thinking about what you mentioned in your post, this mentality is definitely not limited to Pinoys and Filipino-American people. The same type of attitude is carried by many different ethnicities.

Mexicans and Chicanos come to mind, as well as Africans from African, and African Americans.

Although, as a Filipino living in such an ethnic and cultural place such as The Bay Area, I have yet to see another race of people who have the affinity that Filipinos do for each other.

Everywhere I've ever worked at, I would get countless Filipino people asking me if I was Filipino, and then after finding out, sharing this sort of silent kinship that I've never seen with any other group of people.

I've gotten and given discounts out, just for being who I am. (A Filipino is never shy to ask for a discount on the basis of you also being Filipino...gotta love it...LOL)

I'm proud of who I am, and honestly I've always felt connected to my people whether they be from the Philippines, or here at home. I think a lot of that has to do with me taking the time to actually learn about the intersecting histories of the Philippines and the US, and not believing the propaganda that they teach here in the US public school systems.

I give you guys there so much more respect. We really do have it easy over here, as cliche as it sounds.
