There have been rumblings from the Miletich camp for several months that UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes was considering winding down his extraordinary career.

Hughes recently confirmed to Sherdog.com that he indeed plans on fighting out his current UFC contract, which will have one bout left following his title defense against Georges St. Pierre on Nov. 18, before retiring from active participation in the sport of mixed martial arts.

The question was first broached when Hughes was asked where he saw himself a year from now. “Hopefully retired with my family back home,” the UFC welterweight champion responded.

“In a perfect world” Hughes declared that he would “fight a couple more times, retire, [and] go back home.”

Hughes cited the strain of being away from family, including a newborn daughter, as motivation for hanging up his four-ounce gloves.

The two time UFC champ, who stands at 40-4-0, made it clear he has come to a point where the benefits of fighting are far outweighed by the negatives that come along with it.

Hughes, 33, did leave open the possibility, should he get past a very tough St. Pierre, of moving up in weight to face UFC 185-pound champion Anderson Silva in hopes of becoming the first fighter to concurrently hold UFC titles in multiple weight classes.

matt hughes is only fighting a tuf guy if he gets through this weekend. They said winners of TUF fight winner of gsp or hughes. So TUF is gon fight GSP cause matt hughes is gon lose.

As much as some of us hate him, Hughes will most likely beat GSP. I hope he doesn't. Win or lose he will be around for a while. I think the only guy who has a chance at beating Hughes is BJ Penn. They are 1-1, so a rubber match is in order. Everyone knows Penn didn't train hard. He thought he would walk over Hughes like he did the 1st time they fought.
The key to beating Hughes is to take his strength away, not let him take it to the ground. Hughes trains like a pro should, balls out. Like a boxer, the best way to train is spar, spar, spar. That's the best way to gain muscle memory. All the other stuff is bonus.

Ive seen Matt Hughes training and its mostly heavy Wieght lifting, its all on his website...his training method and ive seen some footage on the ufc65 page. Ya the only way matt wins is he out powers his opponents, and hughes made a mistake goin to the ground with BJ Penn, penn dominated hughes on teh ground and also the standup. Hughes knows he cant take a jui jistu guy like penn, he probably braggin about beating a old royce gracie with his GJJ. But a in shape BJ Penn he will never beat. And GSP aint no opponent matt should jus look down at, remember georges beat bj penn too so this fight can go either way...jus have to see in 5 more days.

Matt Hughes training is mosly heavy lifting, weight training. His stand up is horrible, his take down is good and he jus uses his strenth from there. I seen and read his training method and he dont do much stuff that involves fighting. He cannot beat a in shape BJ Penn, cause he cant handle BJJ with somebody as yound and talented as he is. So he beat Royce Gracie so what, Royce is like Shamrock, too old to compete at his peak but somone like Penn he cant beat. Also GSP aint nobody Hughes should jus look down at, he no joke and wants to win this time, and keep in mind that georges beat Penn too so this is gonna be the best fight of the year hopefully for gsp and hughes. I know hughes has some doubts why he is training extra hard for this fight and he knows he is against one of his best opponents this saturday. 5 more days and we will see what happens.
