PRIDE Middleweight champion Vanderlei Silva is recovering well from his knee surgery. The "Axe Murderer" had surgery on both knees this past Wednesday in Curitiba and his recovery process has been surprisingly fast. Silva had been living with a knee problem since before his PRIDE 10 fight against Guy Mezger, but chose not to make it public, and while training for his PRIDE 23 bout against Hiromitsu Kanehara he aggravated the problem, but opted to compete anyway. After the fight surgery was demanded and it was finally done on December 11 of 2002 on both the left and the right knee, with the left one being the most serious due to ligament problems. Now Vanderlei Silva is recovering from the procedures and is expected to be back in the PRIDE ring in mid-2003.

Harsh but somewhat fair I guess kaps..

Remember though...Wanderlei can only fight who Pride put him in with...he still beat Sak x 2 which is something no one else had come close to at that time.

Hopefully he will be matched up against some better competition in the future. Bas for example would be a great challenge for him

I know its not his fault, I believe Bas would be an excellent match up for him too, I also read that he wants to fight Yoshida, I would love to see that fight.....

Yeah, that would be a big seller in japan also so it could definitely happen...

I would also like to see him and Chuck throw bombs at each other for a while!

I think the biggest problem for the LHW division and MMA in general is that there isn't enough fights at the top or second level to keep constant top level competition for the top guys.

Tito for example, before the Ken Shamrock fight, had a year off due to injury, but before that he fought Vladdy, who has improved a great deal since then, Elvis who was reasonably inexperienced then and Tito is not a good match up for him anyway, and Evan Tanner who is a good fighter, but slightly out of class against Tito.

If there was some stiffer competition around, the current state of the UFC LHW belt may be a different story.

However, Tito is a great fighter and deserves his long reign IMO, but if there was a greater depth of fighters around, perhaps he wouldn't have had the luxury of they full year off as champ?
