The Pop Jewel Comes Home to 'Manila'

She left the US and came here to launch her recording career—so it seems only right that her first single would be a song that speaks of the joys of living in this crowded and crazy but wonderfully unique city.

The single is entitled Manila, and it's the carrier track of Feel Good Music, the debut album of Amber (real name: Amber Alejo Rowley), a hot new Fil-Am pop star whose smoldering, sexy looks may remind you of internationally-famous pop stars like Gwen Stefani, but her warm ways and winning smile are distinctly Pinoy. The child of an American father and a Filipina mother from Malolos, Bulacan, Amber was born in the US, relocated to the Philippines with her family at age five, then moved back to the US again for high school.

After high school, Amber settled in Los Angeles, California to seriously pursue her singing career. She started off working with different touring groups, and doing background vocals for artists such as Hillary Duff. In 2004, Amber was signed to NBA player Dale Davis’ record label, W.A.R. Entertainment. She recorded two singles for the movie soundtrack Playa’s Ball. After her contract expired, she moved to Osaka, Japan where she worked as a lead vocalist for the popular rock/Hip-hop stage show Enwhy at Universal Studios. After finishing her contract with Universal, she decided to make a detour to Manila to see what opportunities were available.

She arrived in September last year. For one week, she got busy sending out demo CDs to various recording companies. Although she had already done some work in the US, Amber says there was never any doubt about wanting to come and start a career in Manila.

“I grew up here, and I have a lot of good memories in Manila,” says Amber. “I fell in love with the life here, because it's different. People here are just real. Life is hard, but they always know how to make the best out of the situation.”

And even when she was in Los Angeles, Amber says a part of her always remained in Manila. She remembered what it felt like to play in the streets, remembered the smell of freshly-baked pandesal in the morning and of eating barbecue as she and her cousins played in the fields back in Malolos, where she grew up.

Practically all the recording companies to which she sent her demo sent back feelers to say they were interested. But Amber decided to go with the Viva Records offer after hearing what the company had in mind, which happened to fit in with her own vision for her career. She also believed that Viva had a good re######tion and track record in building up recording stars.

Amber says she doesn't see it as giving up what she already had in the US. “It's not so much giving up, because I'm in this for more than just self-gratification,” she says. “I don't feel like I'm losing out on anything. In fact, I'm fortunate to have other opportunities and the chance to come here and give back (to my fellow Filipinos).”

The 12-track album is a tribute to Amber's roots. Aside from the carrier single Manila—which is already number one on various radio countdowns—the album also contains songs like In This Place (a fun, upbeat love song), Jungle (a reference to the fact that when most foreigners think of the Philippines, they think 'jungle'), So Beautiful (a mid-tempo love song with an alternative pop vibe), Ikaw Ang Buhay Ko (originally written in English and translated by Edith Gallardo), See You Soon (an English love ballad), Feel Good Music (a song about people going through trials and finding an escape through their favorite song), He's Not You (a soulful R & B ballad about finding the perfect guy), All For Nothing (an intense, uptempo track about feeling under-appreciated in a relationship), I Need (a fun, pop-up uptempo song about seeing someone you like for the first time), We Need Love (an inspirational song which says that as long as we put love first, there's nothing we can't overcome) and Daddy (a song about forgiveness and appreciation for the number-one man in our lives).

Amber says she's not out to compete with anyone. She's just here to do her thing. “There's great talent here, and I don't want to take anything from anyone. I'm just trying to go where I feel I'm supposed to be. I see the door and I'm gonna walk through it,” says the singer billed as the Pop Jewel for the shining, luminescent quality of her voice.

Amber's album Feel Good Music is sponsored by No Curfew and Mossimo. Feel Good Music available at all major record stores nationwide and is distributed by Viva Records.
